Beer is losing its alcohol

why does everyone seem to be real ale snobs and no lager snobs? Lager seems to be dismissed completely. Germanophobia?

Lager is a brewing method, rather than a type of beer. People tend to do more with ale, as it's easier to brew. The "real ale" classification is stupid as well, and isn't at all inclusive. I say don't label yourself as a 'lager' fan or 'real ale' fan. Just say you enjoy beer!

One absolutely epic beer I wish was cheaper is Budvar. Seriously nice!!

Try and get some other variations of Budvar, well worth trying if you like the standard Budvar.

I don't get the larger vs ale fight - I really enjoy both a good Ale or a nice larger at different points.

My preference would usually be towards Ale and I will poke fun at larger drinkers but not seriously. I even don't mind bud!

What's larger?

Alcohol content doesnt make a drink nice.
if you are drinking for the sake of getting drunk. you are doing it wrong.
Its a bonus not a reason.

There is a world of difference between drinks like Special Brew and decent high-strength beer/lager.

Some of the nicest beers I've ever had have been over 11%

Rubbish. Take cask strength whisky for example, the high alcohol content adds a great deal to the drink.

Exactly.

True lambic beers are actually very sour and crisp, only some commercial sweetened stuff for girls and children (not trying to be disrespectful but that is why some lambic beers are sweetened) is an exception. Of course finding true lambic beers in the UK is impossible.

when I used to live in Switzerland there was a large Belgium beer importer a few miles down the road who would ship in truck loads of real Belgium beer, often straight from the abbeys like Chimay etc.

Please say near Zurich, please say near Zurich, please say near Zurich!!!!

I went to Brussels recently and it was a revelation. I have always enjoyed Belgian beers but the sheer choice available was mind blowing. No hangovers either!

Having said that, I enjoy lager too. Will often drink the mainstream (ish, not a fan of Carling or Fosters but things like Staropramen, Heineken etc are fine in my book) lagers available back in London but always like to search out something a bit different. Love real ale too albeit not when it's hot.

Out here in Switzerland though the local stuff is pretty good pilsner style stuff I find and you get quite a lot of the German stuff too. They love their wheat beer as well which is a good thing in my book!

Typical "Real" Ale drinkers...
