being tight has paid off

I concur, there is being tight for a purpose but you need to enjoy yourself in life and have some luxuries to look forward to.

Spot on and only wish my dad had that same attitude when i and my brothers were younger...it wasnt like he was making crappy money...he was making a shedload as a mechanical engineer.

Personally ive got another 2 yrs left on my mortgage then ill be mortgage free here...my house in Canada has another 6 yrs left on its mortgage so once the mortgage is paid off here i intend to pay off the remainder of my mortgage off in Canada.

REMORTGAGE.

Have some fun.

Just a few thousand, treat the family to a must deserved holiday/new clothes/eat out.

You never know what tomorrow brings..

dont want another mortgage , the plan now is to save then buy a detached place with some land in the sticks (it can be done we have reasearched)
was thinking overseas but not sure.
i think the main thing is to enjoy life and be tight at the same time ,to me thats my surfing bbqs ect (roll on next friday)

Good for you.

But personally I would never sacrifice my family's lifestyle just to pay off my mortgage any quicker. You never know how long you have with your family and thus I'd want to live it to max but within my means. Not be tight fisted.

That makes it more understandable. You haven't paid off a £140k mortgage in that period as it sounds in your opening post :p

Does the household income being under 20k include income from the caravan?

no income from that ,we arnt allowed to sub let and it was only £750 ten years back (big though and refurnished by my other half)

I would have stretched it out probably 20 years, couldn't be dealing with holidays in a caravan every year.

I'm far too gadgety to be frugal.

Surely the repayments on £44K are so tiny that its better to just pay it as it has to be cheaper than any rent, and at least enjoy yourself?!

Still, respect for doing it though, even though its not exactly a large mortgage, not owing money is always good.

save or your pennies all your life then give to someone else to squander when you die awesome :D

spend your dosh do what you want when you want.have fun :)

Not only that, but you can't like nice things. Everything I like costs a bajillion pounds :p

I'm the same, hence the taking 5 years to pay off the £80k. With our joint income we could have probably stretched to not having a mortgage at all, but then we would have had no Beemer, Plasma TV's, Holidays and most importantly PC upgrades.....

I agree. Whenever I hear a friend or acquaintenace whining about being broke when they're paying a mortgage of less than £250-300 a month, it makes me want to punch them.

Sooooo,

44k mortgage, 6k redundancy and 3 months in lieu. That means something like 44k-6k-2k?

Leaves about 36k that you paid over 10 years, 3.6k a year, 300 pounds a month???

While it's excellent that you paid it off as it must have been quite a burden, 300 a month extra is not going to change much is it? If I was you I'd be looking for a better paid job, you'd probably earn more than what you have saved by overpaying all this time.
