This evening Benson, our 6 year old male rottweiler, was put to sleep.

Benson was diagnosed with Arthritis and then Cancer in his left leg early on in 2006. After undergoing treatment throughout the summer unfortunately the cancer returned just as fast as it had first appeared.

In October Benson was taken to the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital in Cambridge for further tests which unfortunately confirmed the worst and that the cancer was too far spread throughout his body for any further treatment.

Benson was the most gentle, loyal and fun loving dog that we have had. He was a true gentleman of the dog world, proof that not all rottweilers are aggressive and dangerous dogs.

Benson, you will be missed :( :( .

RIP.

I've just taken on the farther of my 12 week old black lab puppy who happens to be called Benson.

Hard do losing a pet. When lost my 18 year old Lab who I grew up with, I had to take time off college. I hope it's not too difficult for you.

RIP Benson.

I know how faithful, playful and fun Rotties can be. :(

It's quite fun when they're laid at the top of the stairs, and a visitor who doesn't know the dog wants to go upstairs daren't go up. :D:D

Benson was the name given to him before we collected him but we decided to stick with it. He joined us just before October in 2000 and was the little ball of fun to our main man Zico the doberman :D.

The only thing that really gets me down is that he was only with us for a short but wonderful 6 years :(.

Very sad. RIP Benson :(

It has to be said as well Rotties are usually a reflection of their owners I've heard so it sounds like he must have had a nice life during his 6 years with a family who loved him.

The most violent episode that Benson participated in was to pee on the builder, plumber and electrician when we built our house in 2000/01.

When we had our doberman, Zico, the two together would put off anybody from coming into our front garden. The fact that neither of them had ever displayed an aggressive nature was hard to put across to visitors (with some understanding of the stories told about both types of dogs).

After we had to re-home our doberman, Benson took over the roll of top dog for a year or so before we bought Kaya as his partner with the future prospect of breeding them. Unfortunately when we discovered the arthritis it kind of put that idea out of the picture, and completely destroyed that when the cancer was found.

Kaya stuck with Benson at all times and with this in mind we made the decision to get another puppy to keep her company. When we picked up the Shar Pei, Ruby, on Sunday, Benson was all alive again. Unfortunately it was within 24 hours that the loss of Benson's hind legs brought forward the time for him to be put to sleep :(.

I've never named my own pet, Hence why we have cats called Boogie and Gubbins, plus dogs called Gem and Sam.

Now I'm moving to my own home the gf bought a pup, and then the owner decided he had too many dogs (4 minus the pups!), he said he wanted Benson to come to a good home. I can never say no, I love dogs!

6 years is only half a life for most dogs, but as long as he's had a great 6 years you can only blame nature. Hows your other dog taken it? When our Bruce died, Gem (the other lab) wasn't an happy dog. So now we've always got a younger dog here to keep the older dog company.

That is what makes it harder for us to come to terms with. He was a true softy bugger, an intelligent and crafty rotty who had the best we could give (and then some - check out the lazy git in the flickr photo's where he's fast asleep on the bed).
