Hey guys

Theres another thread on similar lines but its getting a little out of date. Does anybody have any suggestions for the best monitor out there for gaming at a budget of around £250?

Ive been using a 24" samsung tn panel until now but it packed up today so im in the market for a new one. Ill freely admit i dont really understand whether tn or ips are better for games, but I guess I need something with a fairly quick response time.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Cheers

Using a discount code and then Topcashback makes the Dell U2412M come in under £260. Can't say where though I am afraid, but that is where I got my pair from.

The Dell U2412M has low input lag and is an IPS screen. With Bad Company 2 I came top of the round with my old Samsung TN and also with the new screen, so no input lag issues or ghosting that I can see (and I really have tried).

I can genuinely say I have no idea why people say IPS screens are not good for FPS gaming, as mine are fine. I do realise the the U2412M has a much lower input lag than most of the IPS monitors out there though.

Thanks mglover. Ive been looking at that Dell with some interest but I had read reports suggesting that it wasnt ideal for fps games due to the relatively slow response time. Great to hear that you havent seen any such issues

I will second the Dell U2412M excellent screen and very good value for money too, offering a full 16:10 panel, display-port, USB hub and a proper fully adjustable stand.

Of all 14 lcds I've had now, it's the best in every regard. The input lag is near as makes no difference nothing really, I haven't noticed any ghosting and my particular one even has absolutely minimal IPS glow and very even back-lighting. It also has the best black levels I have seen on an IPS display.

Highly recommended, especially for £260 using the deal mglover070588 eluded to. I paid £289 for mine from OcUK on a this week only deal, and I've been really, really impressed with it. It's not like I had only used TN displays before either, indeed I have had 4 IPS and 3 VA panels prior to this one.

I came top of a 64 player round on BF3 today, so it isn't affecting my FPS gaming! It has a very low input lag for an IPS screen.

I really would go out and buy one :).

Get the Dell it's the best looking monitor out there, it doesn't have a cheap nasty gloss plastic bezel. Screen quality is good I had the 2408WFP but in the end I sold it.

For two of these TN panels

It was just horrible using it with competitive FPS games online. So if you play online FPS a lot then look for something else.

What are you saying was poor for FPS gaming, the 2408? ...that's an older VA panel so yea it won't have been great but IPS is quite different.

Not at all, modern IPS displays are pretty fast today, the Dell uses overdrive anyway.

Sounds like you are making statements based on old information. There is nothing wrong with IPS in terms of response rate now, the particular electronics used by a given manufacturer will be the main decider of input lag, and on the Dell it's next to nothing. None overdriven IPS displays are a little slower, however even they are fine in my experience, although some people do say they notice, but with a good overdrive setup like the Dell has, it's not an issue.

For my tuppence worth if you're after a gaming panel I really think the 120hz TN panels are the way to go...

The viewing angles might not be great, but if you're playing a game you're only really worried about your own angle... and the 120hz is really good on my Asus (only just got it).

I have a good vid workstation monitor at home too (an Eizo Coloredge), but this cheap asus kicks its butt for fps gaming ;)

16:10 gives you more square inches of screen than a 16:9 of the same size.
Films etc tend to be 1080p but I personally prefer the 16:10 (1920x1200 resolution) as I have two screens and I get a nice height to them without them being too wide.
