Hello

iam new to the am platform i have an old 939 san deigo 3700 with 2gb geil 400mhz ram (4x512) on a a8n sli and a 8600gt run by a 730w hiper psu and is stuggerling playing 1080p media i use this set up as a htpc ...

what i would like to know what would be the best upgrade path and i would like it to be amd on a micro atx and quite as possible as i already have a i7 and want a change from intel

i was looking at the amd x2 245 @£50 on a Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H @£62 with 2gb 1333 kingston stick @£40

so £152 all in all

but i have heard you can unlock some off the amd dual cores to a quad core with the right chip and mobo could anyone point mein the right direction please :) as i do not have a clue with amd any more thanks in advance

and one last thing by the sounds of it most the am3 boards have onboard gpu's would any of these be better than my 8600gt 512 ? as i could sell that if so for extra funds :D

The x2 240e at stock is 2.8ghz and can easliy be clocked to 3.5ghz whilst remaining surprisingly cool (if you only want dualcore)

I don't think any of the onboard gpu's will be better than 8600gt but I know that the HD4200 that comes with 785g chipsets is more than enough to run HD playback or play older games even without prob ( just tried cod4 on it, 30+ fps on lower res with just the onboard gpu ).

I'd recommend getting the 435 x3 which can be had elsewhere for 56quid in that budget.

So, lets say,
56 for CPU
70 mobo : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-356-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

that's 126, if you could stretch fiver extra for ram you're set with very powerfull rig for very cheap.

240/245 is good chip but x3 435 is better price/performance ratio and you not gonna regret the 15quid extra in the long run.

what about the Asus M4A785TD-V Evo because i was looking for a htpc case but the coolermaster elite 360 will take a full atx, it does not say if its crossfire or sli though ?

thats a shame got NVidia cards :(

anyways ive managed to find 4 diffrent cpus which are in price range now :D

X4 620 £60
X3 435 £60
X2 550 £60

or could go ceap and cheerful

X2 240 £42

help me please as all the cpu's will clock over 3ghz but they all have 2mb cache apart from the X3 which has 1.5mb which is putting me off
