what would be the best board for the E6600, im looking to move away from SLI, its too much hassle, 1 8800GTX will be fine, so what board would give me the best overclockability?

suggest asus p5b deluxe

Hi,

If you can put up with a few foibles of the board i would suggest an Asus p5b deluxe as it is a great overclocker, but it does have problems with sound drivers & a few issues with the onboard Jmicron controller. Good overall though.

What cooling you going to be running?
For 4ghz+ Stable look at 965 boards, for < 4ghz 975 should do the job ok.

For overclocking go with 965 , or 975 if you want the features.

965 generaly is the betetr chipset for high FSB though.

what are the main differences between these chipsets?
I'm only just learning myself but if your not overclocking your system (I'm sure some people don't) the i945PL chipset appears to offer the same level of performance as any chipset for half the price! :o

I believe the i965 is INTEL's newest chipset and is generally considered to be the best bang-for-buck for people looking for a decent overclocking platform for their shiny new CD2 cpu

The i975x is slightly older than the i965 (weird huh?) and as far as I can see offers no advantages and its generally more expensive?

I think atm if your looking for an INTEL platform get an i945PL chipset for a budget build or a i965P chipset if you intend to crank the fsb and overclock the cpu.

nVidia's new 680i chipset is only really for overclockers who must have the latest and greatest and have a large pile of cash and lots of spare time to play with 'beta' hardware :)

You could buy four i945PL motherboards or two i965 motherboards for the price of an single 680i

*This info is for people who understand the meaning of the phrase 'Bang-for-Buck' :D

I wanted a mobo that would allow me 4ghz.

All the mobos I have had:

DFI Infinity rubbish clocker
Intel Bad axe rubbish bios and acted odd in prime @3.8ghz
ASUS P5W DH topped out at 424FSB
EVGA 680i straight in at 4ghz

Different league and will only improve with new bios revisions.

Yup if 4GHz will make you smile when you sleep then I understand, but of course you are paying a lot of extra cash-money for all this, and the hardware manufacturers love you :)

The thing here m8 is to 'consider' the different types of people that are into computing and hardware, not everyone wants to spend the extra cash or indeed even overclock, so your viewpoint of 'best' doesn't actually apply to the whole of mankind. . . .

the 680i looks great, but the price!!!!!!

Nice to see 4GHz, although it would be nice to see a screenshot of some decent stability tests. . . lol 1Mb Super-PI :D

you're gonna be accused of being sour now and 'not being able to afford it' like i saw being bounded around in the graphics forum about the 8800's from easyrider.
