I was thinking of the Samsung Galaxy S but am not sure

There are some picture comparisons between the Galaxy s and the htc desire hd earlier on in this thread, the DHD is the clear winner by a mile in my opinion.

try searching from about page 30 of this thread someone kindly posted the two pictures.

Nokia N8, the software isn't awesome but if your main uses are pics and video that is the best by a country mile. (12MP camera sensor)

The Desire HD and SGS are fairly poor in comparison.

Thanks for this - her last phone was a Sony Satio which was average ish ?

But having owned a raft of HTCs, I have found the camera to be laggy or poor quality hence the reason why I'm a little weary

The Sony Satio camera is better than any smartphone camera on the market (still), that should give you a gauge of how they are.

The N8 camera in point and shoot situations is nearly as good as a top of the range Canon DSLR camera. Its absolutely excellent.

The software, while being poor compared to Android/iOS/WindowsP7 for user-friendlyness and overall design, is quite fine and people don't tend to have trouble using it.

As you'll see here, the camera is nothing short of outstanding - http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/10/04/shootout-nokia-n8-v-canon-550d-dslr/

N8 wins hands down if camera and video are important things just the rest of the phone isn't great, the new symbian has generally been slated as pretty poor, i love a good camera/video but using a phone like that day by day would wind me up, if it had been Android it would have been my next phone for sure.

Neither of those images are even close to N8 quality.

I dont think the OP is too worried about software and if you need a good camera, its a relatively small hit to take for most people.

I disagree with some of your choices the Desire HD has a fantastic camera on certainly best android i would bet, but as the op was asking about the Galaxy S and Desire HD these the pictures below i posted in another thread on these forums .

What about the lag and auto focus ?

Either you have to be a statue or have a tripod for any half decent pictures ?

Lol, i wouldn't say it is nearly as good as Canon's top of the range DSLR.

I say it is acceptable in a general landscape situation in day light without the need using shallow depth of field against Canon's entry level level DSLR with probably shooting with a kit lens.

Top of the range Canon DSLR comes in at an affordable £6,000, without a lens, or memory card.

Anyway, to be REALLY honest, any phone camera is like any other, average at best. I was satisfied with my iPhone v1 camera, and happy with my iPhone 4 camera. It takes ok photos, thats about it.

Dont misunderstand, I'm not even close to suggesting that the N8 is as good as a top DSLR camera.

What I am suggesting, is that is it the best phone camera around at the moment by quite a clear margin, and that it may compare to a DSLR camera in very basic, general use. (ie. women out with their friends spam taking pictures :p)

Which is what I meant by 'point and shoot' situations.

Its just a damn shame about its software :(

If you want the bext camera phone. Nokia N8. 12mp camera, with carl zeiss optics and dual xenon flash. Huge sensor. Nothing else comes close on a phone. Compare the DHD and you will see N8 is superior by miles. It also comes with hdmi out and is generally awesome.

I went with the DHD recently cos I have a decent 10MP compact, though the N8 made my choice very hard. It also has very scratch resistant glass and body (N8) which would have been great for me cos I chuck everything in my pockets... I guess I will have to be careful with my DHD :D

The other reason for the DHD is I wanted to play with Android, having had symbian / nokia phones for the last 5 years. I would go back to nokia eventually, nothing against them - just wanted a change.
