Building a PC for a friend, whats the best cooler for a Q6600? Planning to overclock it to a decent speed. What cooler would you reccomend for it?

I've got the Titan Fenrir which I'm very happy with, got good reviews.
Kinda wished I'd spent more and got the Corsair H50, not sure if it performs better. It just looks cool!

Either that or the Akasa Nero S seem to be the best at a decent price ATM, they'll both keep your CPU with a big OC at reasonable temps.

A second hand Thermalright ultra extreme, no point spending big money on a new cooler such as the megahelims, (good as it is, ive owned both). The ultra may be old but at the time the q6600 was the top cpu, this was the best cooler for it.

It isnt exactly big money tbh, plus it can be used for your future cpu's as it is compatible with socket 1156 and 1366. I didnt see the OP say anything about a budget just that he wanted the best cooler...

I use a Tuniq Tower 120 on mine, and it does the job very well :)

I think the H50 would be very good for water cooling.

Very true, i paid £50.00 new for a TRUE black, used it on two s775 quads clocked at 3.8ghz, (q6600 and q9550) and on a 4ghz i7, coped well with them all, got a megahelims as i fancied the look of it, both are exceptional air coolers, but an ultra at £25.00 ono second hand is a very good bargain.:)

Personally I run my Q6600 under a Megahalems with 2 Apache Black Fans. Its not the cheapest option but at 3.6Ghz its given me an extra 50% speed from stock. I agree with Setter though that a TRUE setup is good, but I have only seen images and screenshots from that and no personal use of it.

This is a prime stable shot of my old q6600 @3.8ghz under a TRUE, dual 2000 rpm fans.

Normally ran it though at 3.6ghz on 1.400 vcore. My q9550 ran about 15-17c cooler with slower 1200 rpm fans.

A TRUE, Thermaltake Frio, Cogage Arrow, Thermalright Venomous X, Noctua NH-D14 or Thermalright Silver Arrow will be able to cool a Q6600 extremely well. The latter two are probably overkill and somewhat expensive but the rest will do a tremendous job at a cheaper price.

Performance in sig.

Great roundup Helios, though i found my old TRUE to be slightly better than my current super mega, albeit the ultra was lapped to 2000 grade grit, same fans though, however the fans sound a lot louder on the mega, maybe down to fin spacing?

I would think so. I have to say I was always skeptical about how great the TRUE was when people were recommending the old Noctua NH-U12P over it. But having actually used it, it's such a good cooler even now. The VX may be slightly better but it's more expensive. I'm not convinced by the Megahalems though but I never tried it with higher RPM fans at the time.

And thanks :). More new coolers will be added soon from Thermalright ;)

Thanks for the recommendations, ideally I'll be going for one that is reasonably priced for what it can do.

I'll send him a list of the recommendations for his cooler. I can't see him spending a lot of money on it, so it might be a Xmas present from someone to him.

Performance and price I would say Cogage Arrow if you have spare fans lying around if not thermalright silver arrow.
The TRUE and coolers like that need fans at high rpm to be at their best meaning much more noise.
Only snag with the Arrows are ram slot issues.
