SMF for me. Used to use phpBB but was a nightmare to update, I believe its easier now, and had some major security problems even on the lastest version.

After reading the SMF feature list I thought it would be awesome... Yes, templates, easy to install, plugins, easy to install.. But after 5 hours of tinkering I just couldn't get what I wanted out of it.

Yesterday I installed SMF (Simple Machines Forum) on a secret test location as the guys on OcUK keep raving on about it, so I thought I’d give it a go.

Its got some cool stuff going on to be quiet honest, by far the easiest template system I’ve seen that actually works and an equally impressive plug-in system.

However, the themes can be described in even less words, one in fact. Dire. My God, the one I finally went with for my testing was ‘basic’, no images for online/offline buttons etc, and it was also the only theme I could actually add the extra links in the header with.

I then had a peek at bbpress for this ‘Wordpress integration’, don’t be silly, it looks more basic than a cavemans drawings, and some really quite basic things are plugins!

Perhaps I've grown to expect too much from Open Source, but I'm going to say phpbb2 again.

*Bows to dodge flying arrows*

-PHPBB - speaks for itself.
-SMF - bulky, bad layout, pretty bad code.
-PunBB - lightweight, more standards-compliant, comparatively well-written.
-MyBB - needs frequent updating, blatant IPB rip-off.
-XMB - not tried, but just looked at the code. Could be worse, but a crapload of globals, some class design and casual usage of bloody EVAL() of all things have put me off. Some other really stupid stuff in there.

Maybe one of their flagship features is "dynamic user posts" :D
