Best gaming graphics card at this time?

Hello all!

I expect this is a pretty recurring question so apologies for another topic about it, but I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.
I know there is going to be an nvidia/ati preference thing, but basically I am buying my first decent gaming computer for a long time and I want to get it right.

I am looking to buy the Titan Goliath system on OCers (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-030-OE) but am stuck on which graphics card to put in it.

I was going to just go with the most expensive ATI 5870, but after reading on here it seems they can be problematic?

So, if you had this system, and could get any card (or perhaps another?) in the list, which would you choose? I want to get a machine that is going to last me a fair while, hence looking at the most expensive cards.
I don't want two years down the line to be bottom of the pile hehe, so I hope I can get a graphics card now that even in a few years will still be capable of playing the new games, albeit probably not at a high resolution.

Any advice, greatfully received!!

a 5850 or a 5870. They are the newest tech and should last a while as you can Crossfire them and should be able to crosfire the 5870 with the 5870x2 when it comes out.

5870 is the most superior option at this time.

A 5850 and going crossfire at a later stage could be a good choice though.

5870 it is then I reckon, thanks for the advice!

I didn't realise it was pre-order though, I thought it was already out, I'm sure I read some people on here already have it? Unless they mean on order rather than pre-order!

Yes its been out for a little while but stocks have run out everywhere. So any new stock goes straight back out the door to fulfill pre-order.
May be worth waiting a week or so as the new 5970(i think )are out on the 18th.
See what the benchmarks look like and price, availability etc.Im sure they would be able to put one in the Goliath.

Good luck :)

Tho not for long... stocks seem to be running out...

There is no best GPU for gaming atm due to stock problems :( and I wouldn't spend money on old tech now.

5870 simply, though as above they are hard to get hold of.

Stay away from the 295, its a great card but they are utterly redundant due to newer tech, hopefully Nvidia will bring out their new cards with decent stock levels or ATI will get their asses into gear and sort out 5 series availability.

Ah right didn't know the 5970 was due shortly, not knowing how the graphics card market works, will it come out with a hefty premium which quickly falls? As obviously like everyone I am on a budget so I don't want to pay through the nose just because it's the very latest!

On the same note, the 5870 may then drop in price a bit hmmm!

I think this question is better suited to this room :

One thing I am a little confused about; in the motherboard specs (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=5&subcat=1283), it says "SLI Support".

In 95thrifles topic, he says ATI = crossfire, nVidia = SLI
So does this mean I can only run two graphics cards if they are both nVidia on this motherboard?

You're link is broken, but there are few motherboards that support both SLI and xFire, even then it's probably not x16 + x16.

5870 is "best" because it does not require SLi/Xfire to get its performance. Its also less power hungry, less noisy and has more features.

GTX295 is obsolete in my mind right now. The only nvidia card that is still of some value is the GTX 260-216 (and maybe the 9800GT that doesnt require a PCIe power plug)

What can the 5870 do right now that a 295 cant ?
