which hard drive has the best ratio of gigabytes to the pound? basically i want loads of storage space but dont wanna spend over the top, 1TB drives are £90 more than 750GB drives, so i think the best drives to go for currently are the 750GB drives, or does anyone care to disagree and put some input in towards my next purchase, basically they will be used to store, mp3's, pictures, movies, etc so access times dont need to be great but i would like the write speeds to be high as copying 100GB of files takes too long currently

500gb is probably the 'sweet spot' at the moment, if you work it out for the price/capacity they offer because the 750gb options are over half as much again in price terms for the extra 250gb. However if you don't have enough free drive bays then it is worth paying the extra for the larger drive I suppose.

The Western Digital 500gb AAKS on This Week Only is a good option at the moment and 7200rpm drives don't get much quicker. :)

If you are putting together a large storage array don't forget that if you use smaller drives you will need to buy more controllers and maybe a bigger PSU so it is not always cheapest overall to get drives with the lowest £/GB ratio.

I was curious about this so I went ahead and copied all the HDDs OcUK had from 250 to 1000 GB to a spreadsheet. I calculated the number of gigabytes each pound buys. Here're the results:

semi-pro waster got it spot-on. The 500 GB WD AAKS is the best deal available by a long shot ATM. The 500 GB Samsung takes second while the 400 GB AAKS takes third. :)
