Best graphics card for around £200?

Even if what some has said is quite obviously incorrect, assuming they have written it in a polite and reasonable manner, then that's absolutely fine. It could simply be the case where they have interpreted things incorrectly. However, if it is met with a response along the lines off; "WTF!!!!!!!! That's complete and utter rubbish", or, "(Insert user-name here) is nothing but a fanboy", and responses of that type of nature, I would be inclined to remove. It doesn't matter whether the posts are "technically" correct or not, those types of posts just leads to people responding in a similar manner, which isn't helpful.

I hope you can understand where I am comming from here. :)

Best value for money are 6950s and 480s (at ocuks prices!) at the moment. Heck it is not that difficult. If you have the PSU and you don't care about the noise get the 480!!!

For the OP - we seem to have forgotten about it - his PSU is not that strong in the 12V rail (I think it is only 36AMPs there) and I would recommend a 6950 for that reason only.

Fair enough. I thought you were pinning me as a fanboy and I had already stated that I would house both Nvidia and ATI in my rig in this thread. That's the last thing I want associated with my name.

I think it's safe to say that the GTX480 is faster, louder, hotter and draws a hell of a lot more power than the 6950. Personally, I'd go 6950 simply because of stellar Crossfire performance on the 6 series and the inability of my board to do SLI. However, if I was only ever going single card, I'm not to fussy when it comes to heat and power consumption, so I would most likely get a GTX480.

Good reasoning. I'm not that bothered about heat. This card (6950) is noisy when ramped up so I don't think I'd be too bothered if the GTX 480 was slightly louder. Just a different shade of humming tbh :D.

If I was faced with the choice of GTX 480 and my 6950 before I bought my card then I would choose the GTX 480. Purely because of the reason I mentioned in a previous post in this thread. To gain my 1920x1440 as with ATI I can only choose 1600x1200. Selling my card and paying £75+ for a resolution change seems fair enough but on a CRT?. So yeah I'd have got the GTX 480 for that reason. GTX 480, GTX 570 and 6950 unlocked and at 6970 speeds are all pretty close in performance but I wouldn't be willing to pay the extra for the GTX 570 as it would be a side grade. I could always sell my 6950 and buy the GTX 480.

If the resolution thing wasn't a problem for me then I'd go for the 6950.

Anandtech has it at I think 10db difference. It maybe 6db. Whatever it was it was significant enough. Others say it's not as bad so I'm conflicted about the noise reports.

When I have my headset on it's not noticeable IMO. When it's through the speakers, then yeah, you don't want to have an intrusive noise to take away from the experience.

+1 (It's the aggressive style people use or the 'delivery' that people employ that is the issue).
 
I think a lot of it comes down to the case cooling, as i think the poorer the circulation the more work the fan has to do. So if you have a hot GPU start with this can push the fan speeds up, which of course is followed by the noise.
 
I notice that with my 470 SLI setup - I have pretty decent case cooling and under normal conditions its reasonably quiet - but after a few weeks the dust build up is incredible, reduces airflow and the fans start to speed up working to remove the heat at which point I have to clean out the dust or live with the noise lol.
 
Worth noting that the later 480's are noticeably better in terms of heat/noise. It's not great but better....def between that and the 6950 I reckon. Overall I'd say 480 as it's got a bit more poke, is ten quid cheaper and you get a 3 year rather than 2 year warranty.
 
I say 6950 but then I don't like nvidia, but even if I did in this case I'd still go 6950,( but then for me the bigger RAM quantity is significant )
