I want to upgrade my GTX 750Ti to a GTX 970

Which would be the best for my system a blower design card like the very nice OCUK Refrence 970 or an Open Air card such as the G1 Gaming or Asus Strix

My case is the NZXT Phantom 410 with the stock case fans which are a 120mm intake fan at the front, a 140mm exhaust at the top and a 120mm at the rear.

My MB is Gigabyte Z77-HD3

Just built a friend a modest pc using the MSI million edition or whatever it's called 970. boost clocks well over 1300mhz right out of the box. Overclocks like a champ. Very nice temps and quiet. It's a bit taller with that cooler design though. Hits 1500 with ease... almost too easy lol

My vote is for the Gigabyte G1 970.

Out of the box it's fastest out of the Strix and the MSI.

I had a Gigabyte 670 before that so I though stick with what you know.

Measure up tho as the G1 is long.

Make sure you update the BIOS when you get your new card as sometimes these older boards (especially Gigabyte Z77) don't like newer graphics cards without a board update :)

how strange, i have the same card at the moment and was looking at an upgrade with the msi 970 on the top of my list :) although... im not commited to anything yet, things may change next month with the prices when the 390 is out

Best bet... wait till R9 300 series next month, even if it has nothing to offer over a 970, the 970 prices may drop a tad. Otherwise, the best 2 cards are the Gigabyte G1 or the MSI Twin Frozr. The MSI card has a fanless mode for idle, can be done on G1, but with bios modification which may void the warranty. The G1 has higher stock clocks, but both cards overclock almost equally as well. G1 has a backplate too.

I was planning on going for the MSI, most popular 970 since it does the best all-round and its often cheaper by a bit. But I'll wait till the new cards, cos I can't build over the next 3 weeks anyway. I'm reconsidering going for the G1 now.

Potentially a stupid question but why do some MBs not like these newer cards without a bios update?

It's my understanding that the 750ti uses the Maxwell Architechture as the 970 does.
