im looking for a new modem as the supplied "bebox" sucks. was hoping some one will recommend me a router that stays relatively cool so maybe mesh chasis, and solid reliable connection. a bonus wil be to be abnle to install third party firmweare like dd wrt or open wrt or tomatoe.

thanks

i am using an old sky dg834gt with custom firmware that works great...they can be had very cheaply.

+1. Can buy the Netgear DG834GT cheap from some auction site, can be easily flashed with custom firmware and they use the Broadcom chipset which is the same as the BE equipment in the exchanges and this I believe gives a better sync.

going around fs section i find a lot of ppl asking what version it is, is there a cerntain version of the router i want becuase of some new features? or do the cutom firmwares only work on some?

It's the DG834GT that you want. I think there's a DG834 variant that might be what they're talking about on ebay.

ok guys a got a problem now, i bought a sky netgear router from ebay for £10. and its the correct one cuase it says it needs a password to acess netgear DG834GT page.

problem now is i go onto openwrt site and im completley lost how am i supose to flash the router. some point me to a guide plz?

i know it goes something like download a.bin file (dont know which one), compile for BCM6348(dont know how), then flash it in through the exsisting web ui (this i dont know but probably the easyiest to solve out of the 3)

Last time I bothered looking the support for things like Netgear DG series was poor at best and probably not worth the effort.

I think it also goes without saying if you don't know what you're doing leave well alone as you will most likely just brick your router.

A quick trawl through the Wiki on the OpenWRT site suggests that at current the ADSL modem drivers aren't even supported properly and you're going to need to do the upgrade via TFTP / serial connections.

It's DGTeam or UberGT or whatever it is you want to run on one of those.
As the name suggests, it's mainly one of Linksys' WRT* routers that run DD-WRT et al.

the DG has always had loads of 3rd party support....and you can't really brick the DG834GT as if you do there's an easy way to recover it every time.
