Best NAS (without HDD) for ~£200

I have no idea how you can have mapped the network drives from the file browser. I don't have that option.

Check this link out.
See the section called Method 2 (windows section)

I am copying over about 90GB here - I find that on small files the rate is very low but it increases to near 40Mb/s write for larger files. That is on a laptop running windows 7 connected to a Gb switch.

There are some settings under your network tab in DSM that might help. I think you may need to enable jumbo packets in your router too.

If you want to fire me an email in trust feel free - I'll get on skype and give you a hand.

Your connection will only ever be as quick a the slowest part...

If you have a device connected at 100mb network speed 7-11mb is about right... that will only go up when everything is connected at gigabit speeds.

an example...

I have a gigabit router with main pc, laptop and a media pc in the living room.

Pc to laptop through the router both gigabit ( transfers at around 30-35mb )
Pc to media pc through the router media pc 10/100 and main pc gigbit ( trabsfers at 10mb )

both using the same file.

Cheers Ringo, ill have a look at the link you provided when i get home later tonight and thanks for the offer of email, i might just end up giving you a shout if im still having issues.

i had a look at the jumbo packets bit in the settings but it did say that my router ip needs to be static whereas ive got it set to dhcp so dont know if that will cause any issues etc.

Hmmm you may very well have hit the nail on the head...i might have to buy a new laptop with a gigabit connection at some point...actually my laptop is getting quite old now but still does the job for me.

I just realised that you are probably using Synology assistant to map drives - this is different from DSM! That's what was confusing.

Well you can use the synology assistant to map the drives but within DSM theres the option to map drives/create shares which is how i set up my share.

Thanks guys, ill re-try again tonight ie map the drives correctly and see if that helps...if not then ill have to look at getting a laptop with a gigabit connection already there.

No problem. I just looked up my settings and it's set to DHCP for me too although I have assigned a static IP in the LAN IP table. I have jumbo frames disabled too - router MTU is set to 1500 so you can only use jumbo frames if every single device on the chain will support a higher value too.

What version of DSM are you running? I cannot find map network drive options in DSM anywhere! For the 211j you should be on DSM 3.0-1354.

Do you not have any devices with GB LAN that you can test out?

Ahh right...well im gonna play with some settings later tonight or when i get the chance...when you say LAN IP table, is that the router lan ip table or the NAS box??...pretty sure my router mtu is set to 1500 but ill have to check on that later.

Im running the latest DSM from synology for the ds 211j...i think its the 1354 version...i dont think its called map drive...its called share ie if you go into the control panel in DSM and it brings up a box with all sorts of settings...theres one box called share and i used that to set up my share as when you click on it, it gives you another box where you input the description etc etc then once you press ok, it sets up the drives as a share.

Unfortunately ringo the only device thats gigabit is my NAS box...my router, laptop and even the media network streamer are all 10/100mb connections. On my gigabit switch, the netgear gs608 i think...the only light that is green is the NAS box connection, otherwise all the others are orange which i think is right...green indicates gigabit and orange indicates non gigabit if im not mistaken.

Anyhow ill give it a go tonight and again if i get to the point im tearing my hair out ill give you a shout on email:).

I'm with you now. When you go into DSM and create shared folder that is just setting up the fileshare and assigning users.

You map the drive from within My Computer -> Map Network Drive ...

Were you trying to upload files using the file browser part of DSM?

I think you are going to be limited with your 10/100Mb connections - router settings are probably ok. The LAN IP table I mention is on the router.

Yep thats the one...sorry i got it mixed up.

And yes i was uploading files using the file browser part of DSM.

Yeh does look like thats the case...im currently looking at a dell laptop which has a gigabit connection...its selling for around £600, the Vostro i think its called...looks pretty decent for the specs as im not after something thats super powerful...just need it for non gaming stuff ie downloading and ripping my Blu rays which my Dell XPS 1210 does a decent job of although its a bit old now....also looking at the HP envy laptop but at £1k or so, its a bit too much money.

Anyhow ill report back later if any other major problems occur...i think my mistake was not mapping the drives in the NAS box properly...which ill do tonight.

Again ringo cheers mate, really appreciate your help on this:).

That could well be the reason then - using the file browser isn't the intended way to do things!

Look at that link I gave you earlier for mapping drives in windows. People on synology forums have reported slower speeds using the File Browser. It's probably only intended for access remotely when logging into DSM.

Ideally you should map all your folders in Windows so that they appear up as a Z: drive for example.

Try that and report back - it should be better performance.

Okk got some success in that i managed to properly map my drives so now the NAS box shows up in my network places and i can now browse using windows.

But saying that the transfer speeds are still pretty poor ie about 10mb/sec im getting so i guess its time to replace my laptop...at the moment i cant afford a new one but looks like ill have to dip into my saving to get a lappy that has a gigabit connection.

Didnt think the transfer speeds would be that affected seeing as my network is at a full 100mb and not 10...so i just assumed that id get about 30-40mb/sec transfer speed and that there wouldnt be such a large bottleneck....unless theres something not right with my network but ive checked and re-checked and as far as i can see it looks ok:confused:.

a 100mb card will theoretically do 12.5MB/s, normally around 10MB/s though. Meaning you can copy 500MB of data in 50 seconds. Gigabit can theoretically do 125MB/s, but mine normally hits around 95-100MB/s and 10-11MB/s on 100mb card

Spawn, could you buy a PCMCIA expansion card for laptop with GB Ethernet? If you have a slot for it then that would be a cheap alternative.

It sounds like you have everything set up correctly but just being limited as the poster above says.

I was trying to copy stuff from an old PC the other day and noticed it was connected at 10MB - even worse than 100!

Cheers mate for clearing that up...i was under the impression because the laptop is connected to the switch at 100mb that it would and could possibly transfer at a higher rate but seems like that is not the case sadly:(.

Sadly my laptop doesnt have that expansion slot:(...it has the express card slot which is 54pin i think but dont know if such an adaptor exists for that...its a Dell XPS1210 laptop...so looks like if i want higher transfer speeds im going to have to invest in a gigabit enabled laptop, which im currently mulling over as the lappy i have now is great but is kinda slowing down with certain things that i do...even just browsing the net causes my cpu fan to go into overdrive where the fan is superloud lol.

Anyhow i have everything setup properly, i had a mate come round whos a bit of a network whizz and he set it up properly for me ie just cleaned up my network and said more or less the same thing that the laptop is causing the slow transfer speeds...compared to transferring stuff from my laptop to my ext hd which he said isnt using a network but rather a usb 2 connection so invariably it will be faster.

Just wanted to say Ringo that you have been a star with your help so thank you ever so much for the advice you have given and that includes the others too.

No probs - sorry you still are having trouble but at least you have an excuse now to invest in a shiny new laptop!

Once you get something sorted keep us updated on how you get on with this. Good luck.

As has been said, remember in networking a 100Mb is 100 Megabit, with 1 Megabit equal to 0.125 megabytes.

100Mb network speed is not 100 megabytes :)

Will do...i managed to transfer all my stuff over...about 500gbs worth and it took most of the night...i just left it running over night ie the transferring.

Managed to get some HD streaming in and its superb for that...no stutters or slowdowns yet and thats over my network, using the AC Ryan playon hd mini network streamer...flawless playback.

Going out later to have a look at some new laptops...i suppose i could just live with the slow transfer speeds for the time being but i know what im like and ill just end up getting a new laptop with a gigabit ethernet connection.

Yep i see that now lol.
