Best night out within an hour or so of Cheltenham

I'm off to Cheltenham for the Gold Cup in March with 7 friends. Most of the hotels in Cheltenham itself are now long since booked up or cost a fortune.

We have booked somewhere in Tewkesbury but it's still relatively expensive and 2 of us will end up driving to the course and back to the hotel anyway, so I've suggested we look a bit further afield - we can cancel up to a week before with no penalty so that's not an issue.

Where would be good for an alternative night out and overnight stop within a hour to an hour and a half of Cheltenham? On the map Bristol or Oxford nearest, but I've never been to either. In practical terms we'll be coming from the M6 north of Birmingham but I don't mind travelling south of Cheltenham if that's the best option.

Any suggestions?

LOL @ Gloucester.
I'd stick with the night out in Cheltenham, it rocks the pants of anywhere else within a 25mile radius.
What's actually the issue with the place you have booked in Tewkesbury? it's about two miles on a straight road to the racecourse and another mile into the centre of town.

Taxi back to your digs wont be more than £10 each from town

FFS don't try and have a night out in Tewkesbury. :D It's more of a ****hole than Gloucester. ;)

Nothing specific. But seeing as two of us won't be drinking during the day, I just thought it's no hardship to drive somewhere a bit further afield for a night out if we could find somewhere better than Cheltenham or Tewkesbury.

Part of the problem is most of us have lived within 20 miles of Liverpool and have been going on nights out there for years and when we go to other places it's usually disappointing compared to what we're used to.

Ice rink?? Since when did we have an Ice rink..

Gloucester usually has one and I saw one at Cribbs causeway on Saturday...

Never seen one in Cheltenham

Had to ask the old dear :o Apparently she's heard of one in Montpellier last year, I've yet to see it though and I was in town a week ago.
