best Screen capture software? (free if possible)

im after some free screen capture software, i looked at a few but they all seem very simialr (duuh) was just wondering if anyone has used any they would recommend.

I use Snagit at work for making user docs where I can capture screens / menus / delayed captures etc and then put arrows, shapes (outline box etc) and text on them.

Works very well and has a 30 day free trial.

This for videos, Snipping tool for screenshots.

Hopefully Microsoft will add more features to the Snipping tool in W8, such as background running and more shortcuts.

I use ZScreen.

Might be overly complex for most people but it gives me exactly what I was after.

Hit printscr, it lets me select an area (or alt + printscr for the active window, ctrl + printscr for the entire screen) it saves it as a PNG file, uploads it to my dropbox then shortens the url via a url shortener of your choice then puts the shortened URL in your clipboard.

It can also use image uploaders like imagur, flickr etc. Has fully customisable hotkeys etc. I love it!

We used that back in uni to maek instructional videos, was pretty decent.

If you like to take a screen shoot picture you could also use faststone this tool can easily capture anything on the screen.
