A friend wants to know..

Whats the best uni for a masters in sports science/Sports biomechanics?

Which uni's are highly regarded?

Brunel was good before.....but now that they have moved most of the campuses to uxbridge and invested something silly like £100m into that place mainly on the sports facilities, its pretty good. Its ashame they never did it while I was there. I went back there a few weeks ago, was was gobsmacked. New library, new halls, indoor running tracks, new astroturf, multistory carpark (in progress)...the list goes on.

Loughborough is probably the Uni that most people instantly associate with sport. It has a good reputation, good results and excellent sporting facilities.

It's pretty tough to get onto the Sports Science and similar courses though due to high demand.

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
(UCAS Code CX63)
Sport and Exercise Science is the study of significant physiological, biomechanical, psychological, sociological and pedagogical influences on human performance during the preparation for, the participation in and the recovery from sport and exercise.
Typical Offers: A levels: 340–360 points from two subjects at A level and a third subject at A level or two subjects at AS level

That's either AAA or AAB at A level. I've also heard that "unnoficially" it really helps if you have played sport at county level or higher if you really want to be sure of a space-not sure how much truth is in this statements, but I have heard it used loads.

the course at leeds met is a shambles, i have hated every moment of it. unless your happy doing absolutely zero practical, pointless essays on work experience, and loads of crap on health related stuff which has very little reelevance to sport, then this is ** niche

loughborough

if you can get the grades

oh, and if you are a really good athlete, ie british standard, grades dont matter too much....

Some of the Rugby team at my college got offered places as long as they got 1 a level.

One of them has played for england and all played at least at county level.

I got in with crappy a levels but I think it was down to my personal statement (non sport course but I do love sports which I think helped too). However I turned down the place as had enough of studying.

Brunel was seriously cramped when I was there. God knows what that campus is like now they've filled it with new buildings and all the students off the other campuses. Quite a few people (and me) have experienced a lot of trouble asian vs white racism just to warn you.

Night life is also crap at Brunel, the union is too small and everything is London prices even though Uxbridge is nowhere near London.

An odd one - but i do believe they're very good at Sports related degrees.

St Marys College in Stawberry Hill, Twickenham.

On the same topic i was wondering what would the best uni to study Psychology (im not going to get 3 A's)

I will agree with you about the nightlife.

Brunel is a top uni for actually learning things! but it is let down by its size. But they have made effective use of the space there. They have moved all the sports grounds across the road to the (ex) disused fields.
Brunel does have race issue problems too....mainly because all the losers from Slough and Wembley who go there to do 10 year business degrees enjoy causing trouble. I never experienced it myself, but I know it is there. Its more of of an underlying factor.
I enjoyed it there, and the facilities are very good.

This is true, even as far back as 1995 and probably further.

Very good as well and affilliated to the universtity of surrey iirc.

I went to what was then the University of North London 11 years ago the course in Sports science was very new and pretty poor, but apparently now it is very good an the university has joined ranks with guildhall i think to become the London Metroplitan University and they offer a total of 10 different sports related courses

I know two people who did psychology in York and they had a great time and enjoyed the course.

From the Guardian Rankings Bath is 1st and Loughborough is 2nd. I know these rankings systems aren't always the best so make of it what you will.
However, I am at Bath and the Sports Training Village is very impressive.

Surprised it took 15 posts before someone mentioned Bath. Loughborough is generally rated higher than bath, but the sports science course here is top class. Anything you'd expect from a sports university you can get at top standard here.

I'm a 2nd year Biochemist at bath and can't recommend the place enough, simply awesome.

Brunel is pretty good for sports science, and i think the campas move is now complete (you would want to check that though).

I think the union bars etc have got a bit better since theyve been upgraded last year.

but it's not the easiest place to have a good time. But it seems to suit the roudy sport science types, so maybe you'll like it.

yeah there is a bit of a race problem. manly because the races stick to themselves, i've not actually seen any race vs race stuff, it's more just of an atmosphere that you wont be friends with each other. The only violence i saw were fights outside the club between islamic guys because one of them thinks another one has been drinking!

Brunel is like a construction site at the moment, quite a lot of buildings are currently undergoing contruction. The sports facilities are pretty good from what I saw when my College had a mini visit last month.
