Hiya

My new PC arrives this week complete with two brand new 250GB hard drives. I currently have around 200GB's of stuff on my current drives, mainly my music collection but i'm just wondering what is going to be the best way of transferring all of this stuff onto my new PC?

I've never really done it before so am unsure of how to go about doing it. Am I correct in thinking that I could connect my IDE drives up to the system running SATA drives, transfer everything onto the new drives, disconnect and i'm away? Or am I missing something?

Thanks
Tom

i think you can just put the old hdd in your new comp and transfer (or copy) everything from the old hdd to the new one (but you will obviously have to install windows first). i was going to say you could transfer everything via a network (if you have one) but as you have 200gb's of files this will take forever so dont bother :D

Yup, the main methods for that sort of amount of data would be

A: build your new machine up fully, and get windows installed on it, then put the drives from your old machine into it as secondary drives (if you've got the ide/sata channels spare to do it).

B: Connect them both to a network, share the relevent folders and copy the data across the network - this may take hours and hours if you have a lot of data.

Cheers guys, just the sort of advice I needed.

Think i'll be putting them in the new system while I transfer everything over and then format/get rid.

Thanks a lot.:)

You could use Norton Ghost or similar software. Immediately creates a complete backup of your current system and copies everything on a second hard drive.

I dont think this guy needs to use ghost. He'll be doing a completely new build with new hardware. He just wanted to know the best way to get his data tranferred across.

The guys above have covered all of the best options. The only other idea i have, is to buy a HD enclosure. This will allow you to add your old HD to your new system via usb/firewire. :)

I've got some old hard drives full of info which I've got ready to go into enclosures when my new system is ready for it :)

It seemed the most logical way to me (and the least hassle).

Exactly as said above as i've just done the same with my new Conroe rig.

Build everything up as you would a new system then put your old hdd in as a secondary, then copy everything accross (or use Ghost if you have it as also said above)
