Best way to clean a chain?

O-ring chain ? Then the best thing to use is gear oil SAE90.. Nice and heavy. Use some diesel or kerosine to clean it. (well thats what the manufacturers say)

Non-o-ring? anything will do.

All those other lubes can make dirt stick to it more, with their sticky gooey formulas.
 
Oh and some people never even bother to clean / lube chains.(o-ring only) I remember reading an article, about a father and son, both racing in MX, one use to lube and the other never bothered.. Chain life was about the same for both. I just go with what the manufacturer suggests as my post above (#21)
 
In ancient history when I owned motorcycles we used to place the chain and some graphite grease in a pan and put it on the stove and bring to the boil and simmer. Stinks out the kitchen though.
