My brother is due to get 4Mb VM broadband installed and I want to advise him about it.
When I had NTL installed a few yrs ago you were given a CD and had to install some software and log in/register during that (annoying) process.
Do you still have to do that or is it possible/better to avoid their software?

Also, it's gonna be routed by a Netgear Rangemax router. Should the initial setup be done with the router connected or direct into the VM modem?
It's a new router that hasn't been setup yet so I fear that may cause more hassle if setting the 2 things up together.

Any info/ideas would be great on this. Thanks

Do you need to install anything - in my memory all the "installing" did for blueyonder was to muck up explorer / OE with "branding" and install things I didn't want!

If its cable then yes you do have to use the CD to register first time, but after that youre permanantly logged in so dont need to use it again if you reformat or change computers.

All the extra stuff like broadband medic is optional and you dont need to install it.

Also be advised that the CD will not work with Vista, i had to use my XP install to register

Seems this is not always the case (weird i know). I helped someone setup a new 2meg cable connection last week, and the only thing i had to do, after the engineer had left, was plug the ethernet cable in, and was up and running on the net, and nothing else. So i would try the connection first before you attempt to register - you simply may not have to. If you do need to register, then there is a method of doing so without using the setup cd (i avoid these if possible). Taken from virginmediauser.com.....

"Quick Guide to setting up the modem without using the setup cd:

connect modem to computer by ethernet cable (blue).

launch internet browser and type into the address bar:
http://80.5.178.26

click register broadband

enter your surname, mobile number and pin number
for the serial number use:
ntl ct8 cj486 (ex-ntl areas) for telewest areas please call tech support as im unsure as to the serial number.

then as soon as you go through the relevant pages it will be registered."

I would also test your connection first with the suppiled modem, then use the router.

It's the cable service.
Thanks for the replies. Any idea about where to plug in the router or not? Or maybe it doesn't matter

When you connect for the first time i would just do it connected straight from the cable modem to the pc incase there is any problems.

Once you know it is all working fine, take your ethernet cable from the back of the pc & put it into the router. Then use a crossover cable from the router to your pc.

Cycle down the cable modem for 10 seconds (unplug it from the electric supply), plug it back in & all should be sorted :)

hope that helps

Should also note you only need the cd if you plan to use USB, ethernet will work as soon as you plug it in if it doesn't power down the modem for 10seconds :)

crossover cable is actully ment for similar devices, like pc to pc, or router to router.

The majority of network devices can now auto sense ports, so it doesnt realy matter which type of cable you use, but imo, its generaly good practice to use the correct type of cable.

As already mentioned, you don't have to 'install' anything. Your computer just connects to the internet as if it were connecting through a LAN.
