Why are you getting a bursery in the first place if you don't need it? I thought these things were supposed to be based on need?

Yes it does seem a bit silly I agree with that, but its something that is automatically given to me by the university. I took a gap year and worked for most of it so do have quite a bit of money behind me.

The money is bad on my parents income, single parent living alone and not on the highest wage means I'm on the highest amount you can get, I know it seems a bit silly considering im not totally in need of it but I'm not going to say no to free money am I now?

Depends how involved you are prepared to be with it as well.

You could buy shares in a company but their value can chop and change in minutes.

My advice would be to start reading the Financial Times, get an idea of whats truly going on, create yourself a portfolio on the FT.com of potential things you might be willing to invest in and once you feel confident you know what its all about go and invest.

It's like Supergroup who own Superdry, my portfolio for our FooTSE league at college had about £10k of shares to begin with, but come December they were worth £15k but then dropped back down to about £11.5k. Same happened with BP and the oil spill, but as soon as they announced their deal with Rosneft, the prices soared again.

so you want to buy shares when they're cheap, and then sell them when the price is high. Get all you money, hold it and wait til something else dramatically drops in value but is likely to increase and then re-invest in that.

Gold or an ISA.

What time period are you looking to lock it away for? I have all my money in my ISA at the moment (Student in a similar situation as yourself), but am just waiting for the time to put it back into stocks.

AMD look to be a great investment right about now. The share prices are the lowest they've been in a long time and I can't see them dropping much lower, despite BD's mediocrity. I'm skint, but if I wasn't, AMD would be where I'd invest.
