hello every one.

Playing BF2 lately on line and have been experiencing a lot of lag.

Even on servers that show a low ping, i still have lag.

So I thing there is a problem at the exchange, as my ISP have confirmed BT having been doing up grade work there.
How ever could not give a time period of the work or what they are doing

Though when I phoned BT they could not tell what, if any work they were doing ! !

A neighbour is with a different ISP, and has simular problems.

Any suggestions please
:)

BT won't tell you, because you ain't talking to the right people - and the right people don't talk to you (because you aren't the one paying them).

The obvious first step would be to see what your speeds are like (compared to a BT Speedtest) - but there's not much guarantee that it bears any relation to your lag issue. Is it every server?

I have a friend who is on Telewest which use optical and not ADSL.
And they have no lag, perhaps our telephone lines/cabling is just not up to Broadband speeds !
is the there no test i can do ! ?
My ISP have advised that i do a 'traceroute' onnthe server i am attached to at the time !
This creates a text file which i can then send them !

Have you tried playing single player, to make sure its nothing wrong with your system? I think you can even host a game on your own computer and play on your own, just to double check (although it isnt a true test).

I have a friend who is on Telewest which use optical and not ADSL.

There both optical when they get to the exchange or green box. As far as telewest/ntl are concerned its optical once it reaches the green box outside your street or whatever. For BT it could also be the same, but its definetely optical on BT once you leave the exchange.

Post us the tracert from the TXT file you have. Also try pinging the server using the -t switch (i.e. ping 127.0.0.1 -t) for about a minute and post the ping results. Ideally they want to be below 60, but still even 90 would give you a pretty lag free game.

Make sure there is nothing else running on your network at the same time, if your running any p2p programs or such, then this will definetely cause the issues your having.

Thanks for the help,
I am not sure how to 'tracert' a BF2 server i am on !
As when you log on to Multiplay it must be to some central server which then points you in the direction of the host server you log on to play.
I have the IP address for the servers i play the games on.
So my ISP informed me i tracert a web address, ie www.overclockers.co.uk
So what do i put in the tracert when i only have the IP address ! ?

Are you sure your problem is Lag and not page filing.
Is there any hard drive activity during these lag episodes.
Whats your system specs etc

Ignore me if you are positive its lag but page filing fx's during gaming on BF2 are identical apart from your red light on and your hard drive thrashing about.
How much ram you got.

Its your PC causing the lag (99% sure of it anyway).

What sort of FPS do you get?

Try turning down the resolution, detail etc.

Hi Malc30,
i am sure that it is lag !
As i have turn off Auto Update off and that helps a bit.
The other night i had a PING of 450 to 1025 ! !

I could not play at all on BF2

So i re booted the PC and went back on line, the PING went down to about 125 - 145.
Still very high to play any decent game on line.
I will look out for any hard drive activity next time this happens.
Though i am still waiting to hear back from my ISP on the Tracert files i sent them.

Hi WOMBATWILSON,

my hard drive is WD 160GB SATA caviar, and i have partitioned it so the C drive is operating system only, and the D drive is for data and applications.
So i hope that the LAg is not due to this !
As before i have played Soldier of Fortune on line and not had any isssues at all !

I e mailed a tracert report ti my ISP.
they inform ed me that the lag was at the level3 networks, and the speed was good when leaving the ISP newwork.
I have since found out that the Multiplay servers have had big problems coping with the large number of gamer clan host servers. To the point that some gamer clans have move server provider because multiplay was having bad lag problems.
This of corse did not help people like me trying to play on public servers.

As of 2 weeks ago things have been better playing on line, my ping is now about 30 - 55, which is good Ping.

many thanks for you guys on advice.

Much appreciated
