I'm aware of all the next gen stuff coming out in 2012....which is really bad timing in my mind as I want to play BF3 but also not have to feel as if what I've just spend £1000 on a system that is obsolete within months.

Am i being irrational? i.e. should I just bite the bullet and buy....

What are you all doing? Buying now, November, or waiting for new intel and nvidia releases?

new stuff coming out doesnt really mean your stuff will become "obselete", it just means leass upgrade path :)

whats your current spec, i heard that the BF3 beta is coming out soon so you could try it with what you have now and then decide.

What system do you currently have? It's a bit hard to offer any advice without knowing your specs. It may be possible do improve performance with a small budget, leaving the bulk of the upgrade until next year.

Well, Intel will be releasing Ivybridge next year, but the performance increase will be little. They are improving the integrated GPU aspect of the CPU, but not much will change in CPU performance.

As for AMD, who knows. Bulldozer will be out soon. No concrete benchmarks yet or ideas on performance, so again, another wait and see scenario. As for their GPU's, they are reportly delayed until 2012, much the same as Nvidias.

Tbh, if you want to play BF3 (not to mention all the other great releases this year), then upgrade now. You will see a huge difference coming from what you have now to something like a 2500k, 4/8Gb ram, 6950/570.

Please don't pair a GTX570 with a AMD 3800....The GPU and the CPU dont work independently, the GPU has to wait for data from the CPU so your 3800 will be a HUGE(!) bottleneck, especially in games like BF3 that will use plenty of CPU grunt.

If you want to max out BF3 then an entire overhaul is in order.

Well, are you thinking of coupling something like the 570 with your current CPU, the 3800+?

The performance would still be terrible in games. Nowadays, a good CPU is just as important, if not more so thanks to the likes of Sandybridge. Newer multi-platform games often get a hashjob port to the PC, thus requiring more CPU grunt than GPU.

You will need at least a dual core CPU to take any advantage of the 570 or something similar.

O sorry I wasn't very clear.... I was ofcourse thinking of doing an entire upgrade..

intel i5-2500k as it seems to be so popular......,

asrock..mobo

(whatever bf3 needs) for graphics maxed out on 1080p

8 gb ddr3 ram

here is the specs that are required according to DICE.
quoted from IGN, they did an interview with DICE not too long ago.

Minimum System Requirements

OS: Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) 32-Bit
PROCESSOR: 2 GHz Dual Core (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or Athlon X2 2.7 GHz)
MEMORY: 2 GB
HARD DRIVE: 20 GB
GRAPHICS CARD AMD: DirectX 10.1 compatible with 512 MB RAM (ATI RADEON 3000, 4000, 5000 or 6000 series, with ATI Radeon 3870 or higher performance)
NVIDIA: DirectX 10.0 compatible with 512 MB RAM (Nvidia GeForce 8, 9, 200, 300, 400 or 500 series with Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher performance)
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
Keyboard and Mouse
DVD ROM Drive

Recommended System Requirements

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
PROCESSOR: Quad-Core CPU
MEMORY: 4 GB
HARD DRIVE: 20 GB
GRAPHICS CARD: DirectX 11 compatible with 1024 MB RAM (Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 OR ATI Radeon 6950)
SOUND CARD: DirectX Compatible
Keyboard and Mouse
DVD ROM Drive

buy now, any top of the range item will do very well for the next few years =P

i would recommend the crosshair v forumla motherboard - it is an am3+ board so will work with all the current amd cpus such as the phenom series and is bulldozer ready. It also has crossfire and sli support.

memory - 8gb corsair vengeance 1600mhz

gfx card - 6870, 6950, 560, 570 (either will preform very well of bf3)

powersupply- you would need around 750w+ - look out for some of the ocz range, they are usually really good and fairly cheap

what case, optical drive and harddrive have you got?

I still think there's going to be enough time before the next gen stuff comes out that you're not going to be scratching your head in a month wishing you'd waited a little longer.

If you're fancying upgrading to the next gen stuff, you could always pick up a cheapish CPU and GPU for now, it'd still be a massive performance increase over what you have currently, then you wouldn't be wasting as much money when IB and next gen GPUs come out (assuming you've made sure everything else in your comp is compatable).
