Ok so as the title goes this post is a bit of a give away, the story is that I am having to RMA my AGP BFG 6800U due to the card being totally borked, I've had contact with BFG and was told that they don't offer any trade-up when replacing cards and have been told it will most likely be replaced with an AGP 7800GS, how does this card compair to the 6800U

Stu

Ah so it will be at least an equal replacement then in performance terms, thats good to know :D

Anyone know how much head way there is on the 7800GS for overclocking on standard cooler?

Stu

A LOT of headroom.

I'm surprised they're swapping it for something faster :)
Would have expected them to offer you a 6800GS.

Yeah but isnt the 6800GS slower than the 6800U, I can understand not giving me an outright faster card but it has to be the same or slightly more performance, their not able to provide a replacement inferior to the original, lol....if they did they would have it back with a MASSIVE complaint!

So I see you eventually got through to them, good to know you are getting the 7800GS.
Yeah well I actually got a friend in the US to contact them for me and give them my details so I did it that way. BFG support finally got back to me and told me that the 7800GS is the likely replacement but hey who knows might be better but better not be worse, lol.

ive seen the reviews and its about the same stock, but jesus it overclocks like a demon, had mine, using xfx overclocker on it (it was the BFG one by the way), got it up to 511/750 couldnt take the memory any further because i ran out of slider!!!

anyway, on 3d mark 05 got 6068 stock, turned it up to that and got 7848 marks on it, also that was stock cooling, so it used to go like a steam train

Hi there

Both BFG and XFX who look after customers directly will always exchange a product for one that is equal or slightly superior. Both are very good companies when it comes to end-user support. :)

Regarding the performance the BFG 7800GS will be on par with a 6800U, but if you overclock it which they do very well it will be the quickest AGP card there is....

Does anyone know if there is a way to unlock any of the extra pipes on this card, I have no idea about overclocking GFX cards at all so if I'm talking rubbish someone slap me. How would I go about overclocking this card, are there any guides anywhere for this specific card?

Also does it support dual displays?

The card cannot be unlocked (in the same way a 7800GT cannot be unlocked).

To overclock all you will basically be doing is using coolbits / rivatuner increaseing your core and memory frequencies. (5 - 10mhz at a time and then run a batch of benchmarks to test for stability and artifacting)

Does anyone know if the BFG 7800GS supports dual displays, there is a DVI and D-Sub connector on the card but I'm not sure whether they can both be used together for dual view as this is essential

On my 6800U there were 2 DVI connectors and dual view was ok, hope this is the same and they just chose to provide both types of connectors instead of just DVI.

Fixed.

My point before is, the current "new" value of a 6800 Ultra (if you could find one) would be about £150-£175. The current new price of a 7800GS is >£200, so BFG are effectively *giving* you money.

I'm so glad I got mine, esp. if I can expect customer service this good!

I can imagine it now...

"Hello, this is BFG customer support."
"Hi, my 7800GS is borked, can I replace it under warranty?"
"Sure, we don't seem to have any in stock right now though, but I do have this 7800GTX lying around unused."
"But my board is AGP."
"Oh don't worry, we'll bundle a DFI SLI-DR board in with it for the inconvenience it will cause."

I can dream can't I? :D
