To be honest, I recommend an SSD because for me it was a big upgrade. Quadcores are now being used by games so should be another good upgrade but with that amount of cash (plus the one you make of selling your current mobo, chip, ram) you could always get an i5 760, a new P55 mobo and 4 gigs of DDR3 ram. It depends if you want to spend those £250 or only about £150.
IME, I use my SSD as a boot drive and for my main game and office apps but that is it. You only want it to speed up critical stuff, the remainder can go onto your current HDD.
Also, IMO, SSD is the single best upgrade you can make onto a computer right now. That is my opinion only of course
