"Big 3" upgrade...i5-3570K or 2500k?

Upgrading CPU/MB/Ram in my gaming HTPC.
Currently running Q6600/6Gb DDr2/560Ti.
Silverstone LC17 HTPC case (Big enough for full ATX and a decent cooler)

Is there any advantage to going 2500k over i5-3570K?
Costwise about the same so either is good.
Not changing this upgrade for a good few years so futureproofing is good.

Looking to overclock, will be happy with 4.5/4.6 so how easy this is will be a factor too.
I use a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cooler.

This cooler ok for an Ivy when overclocked to (say) 4.5/4.6?

Thanks VERY much. :)

If it was me I would get the 3570k. Not much in it performance wise except 100mhz and a better graphics chip but for both cpus being around the same price the 3570k is the slightly better choice. Both will probly overclock about the same though and neither has hyper threading so that doesn't cause an issue in choice. From what ive read the 3570k might run a bit hotter than the 2500k but probably only by a few degrees.

Do you need/want pci 3.0 now or in the next few years? because IB will allow this feature but Sandy will not.

EDIT: just read this thread, maybe you should have a look as overclocking is something you will be doing

If you're not worried about PCIE 3 then I'd go for the SB chip. Cooler OC's, and there's only about ~4% IPC performance between the two. The main focus for IB is on improvements to on board graphics, which your 560Ti makes a moot point anyway.

Yeah...
that was my thinking too.

Been reading up about the Ivy's, more of an evolution of SB but not in a direction that will benefit my needs.

The cooler overclocks is the major factor here i think.
I'm using it in an HTPC in the lounge and more heat=more fan noise so I reckon a QUIETER [email protected] will be plenty.

2500k it is. :)

Will run the PC with one 560Ti see if its good enough for 1080p gaming at very high settings (any thoughts?) and later get a 2nd GPU to run SLi for hopefully a good performance boost if need be.

Unless of course theres a £200 single card out now that will trounce my 560Ti for gaming?

I was going to get the 560Ti but after some research I decided to get the 7850. It's quiet, cool and overclocks like a beast.

So assuming £200 on a GPU card....

Second 560ti for SLi or spend £200 on a single card, like the 7850?
Enough of a performance boost (if any) over SLi 560ti?

(the 560's are 2GB models)

ta.

Clock for clock Ivy Bridge seems about 5% percent faster, and both Ivy and Sandy overclock to similar levels. Ivy tends to suffer massive overheating when pushed past 1.35v or 4.7GHz. On extreme cooling setups, Sandy goes further, indicating that Ivy is pretty poor for a new process.

Ivy Bridge is just a tioe in the water for Intel. I imagine updated revisions of IB will arrive soon which correct the overheating issues and allow >5GHz on air virtually guarenteed.

Ahh didn't realise you already had the 560ti. It's not worth getting the 7850 then, if you want more I'd go for a second 560ti but I imagine it would get quite noisy trying to cool the 2 cards.

Its the MSI "Phantom" 560ti I have which is supposed to be about as quiet as a 560 can get.

Have to admit its VERY quiet, with my Noctua PSU/case fans and Seasonic x760 psu I can hardly hear much of anything from a couple of feet away.

Thinking I might have to spend more than £200 on a single card to obviously beat my 560Ti...and considering I'm gaming at 1080p on my plasma maybe I might not even HAVE to get a second 560?

If you're not going to OC the SB over 4.5ghz you're making a bad purchase.

See my original post ;)

4.5/4.6 is a good overclock?
I'm using a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cooler in an HTPC case where noise is a factor.

Do you know if I can get higher that 4.5/4.6 with this cooler?
Thanks.
