At £330 the 5800X is decent now.

I'm running it in this configuration.

Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2

TeamGroup Vulcan Z T-Force 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4

The RAM was a lot more expensive when i bought it, i have them running at 3200Mhz 16-18-18-56 and that's fine, you don't need mega money C14 3600Mhz RAM, you really don't.

Comes to £576 including the CPU, you could get a slightly cheaper board but the Gigabyte has been good to me, it also has Intel Wifi 6.

For cooling a £40 Tower cooler is plenty. like this

Or if you prefer an AIO for £70. I have the 360 version of that, its excellent, but you don't need the 360, it complete overkill.

Some of those the CPU prices are still rather high, got my 5600x about 6 weeks ago for £245, decent RAM prices though, might double up on my 16Gb to 32.

That 5800x price …. Had the 12700k/12600k in and out of basket a few times now. The 5800x is always just there waiting!

Those are very good prices for people who are upgrading from older AM4 systems but I'm not sure if the rebated price for the 5800X and 5600X makes it competitive enough against the 12700KF and 12600K given all the extra cores you getting better IPC and in the case of the 12600 a spare GPU.

I'd agree if you already have a zen 3 board then just changing the CPU makes sense but for anyone building from scratch then OCUK have the the OEM 12600k at £245 which beats the £330 5800X in almost all tasks while the £85 saving means you get a superior board with more features while the 5600X should really be no more than £200 given the margin it loses by to the 12600k in most workloads.

I have been looking and I am not seeing AL have this easy a job. It depends what game or software you run.

Depends what you do with it.
The 5800x does (not surprisingly) very well against the 12600k in games.

Yeah, speculating of course but I think AMD's strategy is get as many Zen+ and Zen2 users to upgrade as possible which will see them through to another record quarter after which they will either cut prices significantly if sales start to slow down or Zen V Cache will put them back ontop and will replace the old SKU's at their current prices

I suppose the good thing about buying AM4 right now is you can get a cheap board, and cheap (but good RAM), and a 5800X for sub £500, probably even squeeze a cooler in. 12700KF plus Z690 and DDR5 would be the next best option but good luck getting stock of the RAM and change from £750, certainly not getting 50% more performance for the 50% extra cost.
