This will be my first time doing planes on sunday so I wanted a few tips. My cam has 12x zoom so consiering I expect to use that a fair bit and due to the speed of the planes I guess tripods arent the best way to go? Therefore what sort of shutter should I be looking at to reduce camera shake? Also I would like to show some propellor motion on the bi-planes, what shutter speed should I be lookin at for that and will it be too slow for me to handhold?

Its a Sony H1 with IS :)

For prop shots you will want no faster than about 1/30th if you are panning with the aircraft. You should find that gives a sharp body to the plane, the props arent stopped but they arent invisible. Helicopters are a little different depending on the heli in question but even slower than 1/30th would be best.

As for the fast stuff then you dont need super fast at all, just pan with it and 1/200 will be plenty :)

I may be going to this too, whats the best way of capturing a shot, does anyone know if the a95 can shoot "fast" as it takes several seconds to think, then be able to take another and by then the jets long gone :p

I shoot a 'LOT' of airshows and you I mostly use TV shutter priority...as Luke says a slower shutter speed for Prop stuff - for choppers I use a shutter between 1/90 & 1/200
for planes with props usually 1/160 to 1/200

for fast military jets somewhere around 1/640 upwards, and for Large Civilian planes use a shutter speed around 1/400 upwards

I dont often go Less with shutter speeds, as I find that too many shots are lost using extreme slow shutters for prop stuff
