Hey, been speaking to a biker friend, ive been waiting till i was 21 to get a bike, so icould get a full licence etc, however he said if i do my licence now and get a bike restricted to 33bhp i can get it unrestricted when i turn 21.

With this being the case, could i drive this on the motorway and what sort of performance do they produce? I understand the idea of going with a 125 to start with, but its just not feasible. If this was the case, what bike's should i be looking for?

33bhp is usually enough for around 110mph indicated on the speedo, around 100mph if it doesn't have a fairing. Will out accelerate most cars to 60 (probably around 6sec if you get it perfect). Main issue is that it gets boring after a while, but if you've never ridden a bike before it will still feel seriously quick!

You still have to ride it for 2 years before derestricting it, ie you can't take a test a week before your 21st and derestrict a bike a week later when 21, you'd be waiting until you're 23.

You can do a shortened test when your 21 to get it deristricted, if you are within the 2 years.

A 400 sports bike restricted will be fun and have enough power to get on with.

No L-plates, allowed to take a pillion and go on the motorway.

Hmmm dont think thats true but I might be wrong, if you do test under 21 you still have do two years on a 33BHP bikes as the guys who do the Direct access test have learnt on bikes with more than 33BHP, so you would still have to do the 2 years probation

As for the bikes, if you dont know any better the power will feel ok really, nothing neck breaking but will beat easily most cars off the line and to 60 and most are good for 110

You are wrong, it's called accelerated access. If you turn 21 before the 2 years restriction is up then you can take it to instantly be able to ride any bike. The test is taken on a bike with at least 46bhp as in the DAS test. Don't think it's actually any shorter than a normal test.

I've got a DRZ400SM which doesn't have much more than 33bhp but I love it. The performance is pretty good(0-60 5.5-6 seconds) and it tops out at about 95 but gets up there quickly. If you have never ridden a big bike before you would probably be very happy with 33bhp.

oooh Interesting, never heard of that one before lol or know anyone whos done it, but ty for correction lol ill remember that :p

You won't really notice much difference with a restricted 600 so long as it's not a sports bike. With something like a Bandit you only really lose the top end so even at 33bhp it'll still destroy pretty much any car up to ~110mph

I had an NSR 125 R fully de-restricted when i was 21. Performance is defiantly MORE than adequate for a leaner (95 mph straight after being de-restricted and 110 mph if you change the sprockets) trying to get some experience.

The only thing that annoyed me after a while was the standard exhaust noise. It made a kind of annoying whirling noise. Replaced it with an arrow exhaust and it sounded quite good tbh.

You could get the equivalents (Mito 125 or Rs125), but they cost more to run and don't look as good imo. :)

I am also interested in this.... What would i do (without linking me to anything) - I'm 18... Held a driving license for a year, Passed first time etc etc. Never been on a bike before - Could i get a 33bhp bike for 2 years and then unrestricted? or would i have to get a 125cc? Thanks

Well atm I'm riding a 1986 Suzuki rg 125. I've got about 95 out of it if I hug the tank ;) But it's certainly a lot of effort to get there and yeah the noise is fun and I enjoy short hoons on it. But as I'm 6 ft 2 it's certainly just a tad cramped, and I'd not like to go any long distances on it!

For this reason I'm thinking a cbr 600 F would be perfect, ulitmately I still really, really want a cbr 600 RR (as if I'm the only one!) but know that insuring it would be crazy, as well as restricting it being a complete non starter! Of course I'm over 21 now, I could always just have a few lessons, rent a bike and get rid of the restriction . . .

As far as i know yes. You'll need to pass your theory test, CBT (basic training, everyone passes, no time limit) and take the category A practical test. You can now ride bikes up to 33 bhp. After 2 years, you can ride anything.

That's how it was a couple of years ago when I was into the bike scene.

Do it! you should try some insurance quotes first for the 600RR :p if you get an older one it might not be as bad as you think.

only as said above if you pass your cbt, theory and A class practical test
