Bill Gates to retire...

He's a good bloke...

with the kind of wonga he's got to play with, he might just turn out to be one of the best ever. he seems to be as serious about his charity stuff as he ever was about business.

Yeah I like him. We can criticise his software and MS's behaviour in its markets but I think he is a good guy as his donating money and lots of it over the years to research projects, charities and other worthy organistions show a man who knows it is better to give his money to those that need it rather than just keep it all. After all once you get to a few billion in the bank what difference does another few billion make?:p

He's a good bloke. a lot of money, filthy rich. But good bloke. I still say though he can do more, which no doubt I believe he will :)

Do more? He donates millions of dollars to charities, more than you do :p

Mr Gates seems determined to do good with all of his wealth unlike so many other people he seems more than willing to put his money where his mouth is.

HEADRAT

Ruthless businessman, but also does lots for charities with all his wealth. Don't think we'll all be sitting in front of our PCs like now without him.

Billions.

Anyway, You know it's coming, you can hear it round the bend, here it comes, the Anti-MS whiners!

I HATE MIRCOSOFT AND BILL GATES THEY R ALL EVIL LOL, I ONLY USE WINDOZE TO PLAY CS !121p!2121!!11

If he had been paying tax at the same rates as we have to he would not have so much to give away to begin with.

What could he possibly spend all that money on anyhow? He might as well give it away.

Most people choose to give money to charity anonymously, he has chosen to buy a public image with all that cash he has hoarded. The real saints in this world don't have or want billions of dollars to begin with.

Rumour has it that he took a lead role in vista and its not gone too well... lots of dropped features etc.
Thats perhaps why he's decided to stop doing anymore frontline windows work.
I think he's better at concepts rather than team leading, and although a lot of his concepts such as the umpc don't work out well, its nice to see some innovation and he can afford to loose money trying out new ideas.

Um, when the world's richest man writes a cheque for $700m+ someone will notice.

I've never seen an article saying "BILL GATES HERALDS HIS LATEST GIVEAWAY!! LOOK AT ME!!" - now of course he may do that, sure, but it doesn't really matter either way. Your point is invalid.

Unless, of course, you know a way to give away 9 figure cheques without anyone noticing (and you're in the public eye, like Gates) :)

So if I buy a copy of Windows, a lot of it will go to charity right?
Wealth was created largely by MS's surging stock price - which might I add has made lots of people all around the world very rich (it's sort of an essential part of capitalism) - but no, of course the money doesn't go directly to charity....it just adds to the company's profit which of course (most of the time) boosts its share price.

Anyway, BG != MS != Windows.
