Mobo-MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO-ASUS
gpu-gtx 980
os-win 10
ram-16gb (2x8)
cpu-i7 6700k

i am about to install a rtx 2080.

would i need to flash the bios to make sure the new gpu is compatible?

the reason i ask is that on my old pc i had a gtx 660.

i bought 2 gtx 908's.

both when installed caused a very slow boot up.

put the gtx 660 back in...fine!

put the 2 980's in a different newer pc build...fine!

i have heard of bios compatibility issues, and the case above does seem like one to me.

the most recent bios my mobo it is on is 1902 (2016).

there is an update to 3802 (2018).

trhe download page just states:

Improved system performance.
Updated Intel CPU microcode.
Improved DRAM compatibility.

sorry, i got a tad confused.

it really is late, and i should grab some sleep soon, so apologies if i fail to grasp the response.

i did some reading up on legacy/uefi, so would i be correct in assuming my old gtx 660 was probably legacy bios (maybe early hybrid uefi?) and the mobo along with it was probably only compatible with legacy bios?

so when i slotted in the gtx 980 (uefi) into the old mobo it generally didn't play ball?

I cannot remember when GPU's changed over but when they did at first you had to contact support (example EVGA) to get the other bios (I cannot remember which way round).

In your Mobo Bios options there is a setting for supporting legacy devices.

I am assuming the GTX 980's are new enough it may not have liked the default setting of your Bios the older GPU's did, not easy to tell from here.

i tried installing it today, but the 8-Pin + 8-Pin PCI-E had not been supplied.

my old 980 has different cables.

the 2080 has 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin.

i have a cble to fit the 6 pin, but not one for the 8 pin.

the top left and bottom right female points on the cards 8 pin socket are square, while the other insertion points are 6 sided (like a house?).

apologies, i'm not too good sometimes when trying to describe tech.

can you point me in the right direction so i can buy the proper cable?

sorry, i appeared to get myself in a muddle and misread my psu to gpu cables.

maybe i wasn't pressing the pins into the gpu hard enough, who knows?

it's fine now, i'm just about to install the driver.

i used to be terrible when it came to doing anything inside my pc when i first started.

i can do stuff now, but i still retain an element of technophobia when getting new (expensive) gear.

for instance, after installing the card, i got nervous before i pressed the power button (what if i hear a loud pop and smoke comes out of the back?!?) lol

honestly, earlier i took out the 980 and meant to put in the 2080, but i ended up taking out the 980, getting confused, the then putting the 980 BACK IN when i meant to put the 2080 in!

how the HELL does THAT happen??? :)
