Mass Effect 1 and 2 were quality, Dragon Age itself was quality, Dragon Age DLC was pitiful and shows that Bioware are no better than anyone else (*cough* Mafia II) when it comes to trying to cash in on something.
I hope to god they don't try and tie it in with another game if it is set in the ME universe. Seriously if they try and tie it in with existing lore they'll just limit themselves or start trying to do too much and fail at the core gameplay because they tried too hard doing easter eggs.

I thought that, but once someone mentioned Bioware are working on an FPS, i changed my view on it.

Do they still own the rights for MDK?
It wont be mass effect 3. That's already been announced long ago and they've stated you'll be importing your character and choices into it. If it was a prequel you couldn't do that, and the gunman isn't sci-fi enough for it to be a sequel. Besides I think they've made it quite clear they're anouncing a new franchise altogether, not a sequel to an existing franchise, all of which they've already revealed.
