Hi Guys,

Its coming up to my birthday now (16th May if anyone want to buy me presents :p ) so id like to get a good gfx card, ive got a X1950 pro at the min but want something with a bit more umph in it.

I mainly play Flight Simulator x, Crysis, CoD4, BF2 etc etc.

Whats the best card around at the minute then? Still the X2 or? Id heard that there were problems with games not using both cores tho, has that been solved yet?

Thanks in advance guys!
Jas

I would echo what Loadsa is saying, ATI have cards coming out, some say that they are out this month, i doubt that, at least for bigger quantities. But you do have some potentially great cards incoming over the next few months, so you have nothing to lose. The cards that are out now have some great choices in the price ranges, you should consider anything from a 3870 to an 8800GT for something that won't break the bank and will still be a good card. You can also get a 512 MB 8800GTS but in my opinion it's not worth the price difference.

Alternatively you should get one of the cards i mentioned and sell it some time before the new ones are sure to come out, you can often get most of your money back that way.

Between the 3870 X2 and the 8800 range whats going to be the best option?

Could probably stretch to about £300 at a push

The best card on the market today is the 9800GX2.

However, 2x8800GTS in SLI is faster and falls around your budget. You'll obviously need an SLI mobo and hefty PSU to run it, though.

Personally if I was buying a gfx card today, I'd get the 8800GTX. Great value for money.

dunno for over £210 i dont think it is, even the GT stays with it untill 1920x1200, where the gtx pulls away with aa/af

The GX2 is the fastest, with the 3870x2 not to too far behind. Personally, i'd steer clear of the dual GPU cards, as you would be limited by your CPU.

Something like an 8800GT, as mentioned above would give good gains over your x1950pro. If you have a budget of around £300, you could buy the 88GT, sell the x1950 and have iro £220 - 250 to save for when the new cards come out.

Just my 2p's worth :)

Also if your going dual card and want to play FSX you might want to check that all the problems with FSX and the SLI/Crossfire drivers are now corrected as there was a problem with dual card solutions not adding much benefit over a single card solution.

Taff

i dont see what all the fuss is about with the GT being loud.. :/ it just isnt at all..

the Q6600 and 8800GT would be a good choice imo

You should just wait, not a sensible time to buy a new graphics card right now, unless you're uber impatient. :) The new cards are due very very soon, so you're best waiting to ensure you get the most for your money.:)
