Record him playing and then have him listen to it later. That will be quite a revelation!
Its not hard to teach someone with basic but perhaps lacking in certain areas (I.e timing) ability to match up with the rest of the band, they nerd to know what the problem is though
Best thing to do is to explain what doesn't sound right and offer to help, nothing wrong with a bit of "humorous" encouragement either.
