Hi all

About 2.5-3 years ago I upgraded my system to E8400 (3ghz), 4 gig DDR2 ram and HD 4870 (512)

Im still running on XP (32 bit) so only using DX 9.

Been out of the loop for a while on upgrading parts, OS and the effects of DX so im just after a bit of advise.

Im thinking upgrade my system to an i5 or i7 system at the end of the year but I was thinking of upgrading to windows 7 in the mean time.

I generally get very decent gaming performance still out of this machine. Only the latest games do I have to turn down a little bit and even then they still look and play amazingly well (BFBC2 runs amazing apart from the freeze crashing that I cant fix for some reason so I cant really play it).

Getting Win7 64 bit would allow me to use all my ram (although the OP uses more so dont think that will effect much) but what will being able to use DX 10.1 do? Will it improve or reduce performance and is the visiable effects you get from it noticable?

Also how much of a difference would upgrading my card to something like the HD 6870 do with my processor? I have heard I can over clock my CPU well, but im not sure how good my MB is for that. Its the Asus P5q but I think its the bog standard one not the pro one (checked my OLD confirm email from where I got it and its the Asus P5Q P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard). Also I have never overclocked anything so I dont even know where to start with that.

I do have an external CPU cooler if that helps at all (Asus Silent Knight AL Socket 775 / AM2 / 754 / 939 / 940 Pure Aluminium Processor Cooler)

Any help or advice will be appreciated very much.
