Bit of reassurance before I clean install Win 7 over XP

Hi folks,

Never done anything like this before but my understanding is as follows:

1) Back up all data to external drive (done)

2) Locate original installation discs for any other software you want to retain (done)

3) Stick the Win 7 disc in and follow the instructions (bit nervous!)

I have 2 x 160 GB HD's, one partition each.

I'd like to format both drives and create a 40 GB partition on one of them for the Win 7 OS and some other stuff like Photoshop.

My question - I will be prompted to create the appropriate partitions and format the current drives during the installation process of Win 7, correct?

I don't have to separately partition and format beforehand?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

BigLad.

You can create partitions from within the W7 installer, yes. Just boot from the disc and you should be good to go. It sounds like you've taken all the sensible steps before installing (which a lot of people don't, then moan about it when things go wrong) so you should be fine.

if you pick the custom install option in the win 7 installer, you'll get options to setup partitions, though you may need to make the win 7 partition a bit bigger than 40gb. a clean win 7 install takes up about 11gb or more

One last thing guys before I do this.

The one disc I can't find is the Sky Broadband installation disc....how do I get round this?

Many thanks

Jon.

You may want to download up-to-date drivers and software before installing w7. Just makes everything faster and easier. Things like Firefox and microsoft security essentials.

If your wireless router is up and running you probably won't even need the disc. I've never installed anything that came with any broadband service as I consider it crapware (at lot of the time, it is)

When W7 installs and goes through the initial out of box configuration, providing it has installed drivers for your wireless adapter it will give you a list of local networks in range - just choose yours, enter the encryption key and off you go. If you're wired it's even easier.

Thanks mate.

The goood news is that it's installed and seems to have gone without incident.

Net connection was just there waiting for me.

Now I just hope to hell that it speeds the PC up after fomatting the drives to get rid of 6 years worth of accumulated junk!

Cheers
