Bizarre happenings with my new X2

Hey all,

I recently purchased an X2 4400+ from these boards,

at firat i thought the chip was dead as i was getting no POST from it after replacing my 3500+ (and resetting the CMOS.)

In desperation i removed one of my to ram sticks from DIMM2 (at random tbh) lo and behold it booted!

Now bearing in mind i have had 2 1gb sticks of ram in dimm slots 1 and 2 for about a year with NP's and i didnt even remove the baord to install the new cpu so really didnt touch the ram at all... I put dimm2 back in and took dimm1 out and it wouldnt boot! Just sat there...

So i tried the sticks in DIMM 3 and 4.. lo and behold, it booted with the full 2 GB's and in dual channel etc...

can anyone think of ANY reason why this should happen? it coulnt be a slightly damaged memory controller on the cpu could it? I mean all seems to be working in slots 3 and 4 but things like this bug me!

Any ideas guy? :)

Hi
I would be very suprised if the cpu was at fault, i bet it was dislodged (ram) when you installed the processor or by moving the case. Have you tried again since? Try cleaning the contacts on the ram.

yup done all that! I cant find a single thing wrong. Its currently running fine in DIMM slots 3 and 4 but thats not the point.. why has my DIMM slot suddenly died :s really really odd!!

Did you notice any bent pins on the cpu as this can sometimes cause this failure! I think.

nope, i inspected it very closely before installing it and all looked perfect... im totally mystified.. i supposed something that was about to go could have gone on the board because i moved the whole case i spose... doesnt seem likely though :\

I agree, if it were gfx slot i could understand, what with the weight of it. Do you get a performance hit with it in slots 3/4. It looks like you maybe stuck with it :(

i didnt get a chance to try it in slots 1/2 to see what the performance would be like! Its feeling pretty snappy tbh as it is but i just dont like knowing my HW is possibly broken :\

I just cant think of what might be wrong...

Bet your thinking is it running as fast as it could if it were in the other slots! Have you still got the other cpu? That would tell you what the problem is then.

hmm it could be that as my ram sets itself to 1T by default if i reset the cmos.

I'll give that a go tommorrow and see if it sorts it, anyone reckon working at 1T in slots 3 and 4 is worse than 2T in slots 1 and 2 if thats the case?

Whats the deal wit hthe 2T thing? does nayone know the reason or is it just a "bug"?

Thanks :)

see i thought that but im not convinced that the amd mem controllers work like that (I could be wrong) to define hard coded memory locations wouldnt be particularly sensible, what would be more sensible would be for the cpu to request the start and end locations of the first, second, third and fourth DIMM from the mobo and it not matter which DIMM slot the ram is physcially in.

I think im going to have to swap the cpu's back to satisfy my curiosity, though i spose if it is a problem with the cpu theres not a lot i can do about it as i bought it second hand :)
