Black Ops Most Pirated Title of 2010

Games are too expensive, good thing I like about the Steam sale at this time of month I will gladly pay less than £10 per title.

If games were at a reasonable price like they was in the late 80's/90's I am sure people would be less people bothering to pirate games in the first place.

I seem to recall games actually being more in the 90's and cheaper now.

I remember my parents paying £44 for Goldeneye.

A game costing £30 in 1998, purely down to inflation should be costing £40 now.
I don't know how much games cost in 1988, but a game costings £30 then should cost £62 keeping up with inflation.

£9.99 was the cost of non-budget games, £1.99 / £2.99 for budget releases.

You can bet a fair few of those downloaded Black Ops to see how it ran on their PC, given all the performance issues surrounding both the SP and MP. The rest didn't fancy paying full price for a 5 hour re skinned version of the previous 6 COD games.

The only reason BFBC2 is in there is because it had a SP element, albeit short and uninspired. And the only reason there was a SP in the first place was because it was a console game as well. If BFBC2 had been an exclusively MP game then it wouldn't have made it in the top 50 most pirated games.

Mafia 2 is in the top 5 because it's only half the game, the rest of it was DLC.

StarCraft 2 again has a short SP campaign and a lot of those who pirated it may well trying before they buy because a lot wouldn't have played the first one being released so long ago.

All of the above have one thing in common, short SP or no demo available or both.

Mass Effect 2 is really the exception, supposedly a good game with plenty of hours worth of gaming in it and a playable demo. Was there particularly strict DRM or activation limits?

Having said all of that, how many of those downloaded games were genuine lost sales? Or how many went on to buy the full game.

Give people something worth buying and they will pay for it.

Games cost that much in the 90's? Damn. All i can remember is my Dad gruding £2.99 for the complete cassette pack for Dizzy on the Amstrad lol. I don't even have a clue how much console games for the megadrive etc were as we used to rent them.

I actually remember piracy being FAR worse in the 80s than now, even with games costing only 2 quid. Most people I knew had several hundred spectrum and commodore games pirated on tapes. So obviously cost didn't make all that much difference.

£9.99 in 1988 is around £20 now. However, now you have to remember that a AAA game costs probably 10x what it does now than it did, adjusting for inflation.
Maybe but say a release costs £39.99, if they made new games priced at £14.99 the chances are I would buy 4 games per month at £60 cost rather than none at all or unless I see a game for sale on Steam. :)

Companys would make money quicker if the games were cheaper in the first place.

see how much most games cost to make, then see how much money they spend on advertising...

its painful because its usually 5-10x what the game cost to make and the majority of games would sell just aswell without the massive budget that gets spent on tv ads , magazine spreads etc

I think you'll find people are just cheaper, especially now piracy is such a convenient option.

If you don't want to pay a price for something, you shouldn't get it for free by default. Just don't buy it.

i bet that wasnt the norm?

i think resident evil 2 cost £50 when it came out to , wasnt there some n64 games that cost well over 60 ?

I remember the first Turok game on N64 was £69.99... :o

The problem (very basically) was that Nintendo opted to use very expensive cartidges instead of cheap CDs, which was reflected in the mark-up in price.

people who say games are more expensive now have got a flamin' clue. there are plenty of examples of cartridge based games being stupendously expensive. Turok on the n64, Goldeneye, zoop (> £50!) on the megadrive, virtua racing on the megadrive was near £70 as i recall.

Like ive said in other threads, we've never had it so good.

Lol when the game is staying at £40, people are bound to pirate it. If activision had lowered the price maybe less piracy would have been committed;). Oh well painful lesson for activision and they deserved it.

BS. if you cant afford it dont buy it. if you want to pirate it, dont blame it on the price of the game. its because your a cheap sod.
