At my parents house in France in the end wall theres probably around 30-40 small black shiny spiders lurking in the cracks.

I am unsure to whether these could be a problem. It seems to me having so many in such a small area isn't good, especially with them sounding like possible black widows!

Has anyone any experience with spiders?

my dads out there at the moment and back on the weekend, will try and get him to get a picture.

Just seems wierd hows there's so many all together, must be 40 at least on a 15ft long end house wall.

If they're harmless then let them be. There's a massive spider on my wall just now and I'm pleased to see him (or her) there. House spiders stay away from me, I stay away from them, and they eat flies. Although if I'm watching a film at night when I turn on the lights afterwards I often find that a house spider has been watching it as well.

Sometimes I talk to them. They've yet to reply.

Could be false widow spiders - a relative of the black widow. They can bite but are only dangerous if a bite gets infected. We had one in the manhole in our garden (in Sussex) - looked just like a black widow but without the red markings. Not heard of them living in groups though - maybe just a family group?

To have so many small spiders in close proximity must mean that they've only just hatched (do spiders hatch?). If they're staying in a particularly warm area of the country then they might want to take some pictures and try to identify them just to be sure they aren't harmful to humans but it's probably nothing to worry about. So long as your folks aren't arachnophobic.

I find the simplest way to identify a spider, even a black widow, is to turn over the magazine you smashed it to bits with and look at it. Now if it's a dead spider, great, it's not going to harm you. If it's still kicking, just returned said magazine to any immovable object with force and look again. If there's no spider on the magazine, RUN !!

They are a variety of extremely small Clockspiders, If I were you I'd find 40 very small clocks and then they won't harm you. If you don't, I would advise hiding all your shoes.

reading this thread can I see that ocuk has evolved into a world of vocabulary that doesn't include "nuke it from orbit"?

Oh please god let it be so :o

yeah .. found a few of these when I was living in France. Harmless critters.

Not as bad as scorpions in the shower like I had in Trieste though.
