Bottom line? FXAA and MSAA/SMAA/SSAA are all obsolete. Use TAA wherever possible when at native res, or DLSS Quality (if 1440p output)/DLAA (if available, most old games don't have it...) for the superior image quality and best performance balance.

You can't claim a GPU is not powerful enough when you're using ancient methods of AA slapped on top of each other several times over as not only are you not getting the best image clarity, but you're also returning seriously low framerates. I played it at native 4K with TAA, that's super clean with no aliasing issues anywhere, and perfect sharpness (Rockstar Launcher version) whilst the Epic Store version has DLSS 3.7 set to Quality mode for the extra detail subtleties and the 4090 draws less power so runs cooler/quieter. Either way the game can be locked to a constant 100/120fps.

I just benchmarked it with the FXAA & MSAA off and it like 140 to 180fps

Am just so used to using them setting from years ago :cry:
 
Can the 4090 do 4k DLSS Quality with Path Tracing and no frame gen? Can it do 60fps locked, without dropping when driving or in heavy scenes?


At 4K you would be using DLSS Performance ideally not Quality, at 1440P you'd be using DLSS Quality - This way theinternal renders are consistent between both, though teh 4K output is still higher quality using DLSS P than 1440P using DLSS Q.

Anyways! The answer is no for 4K DLSS Quality, but yes for 4K DLSS Performance. In Quality mode it's around >40fps, in Performance mode it's >60fps with a handful of dips to 57fps here and there, it's completely smooth and responsive though.

Obviously enabling Frame Gen then takes that up to >100fps

That's in Cyberpunk, I don't have any other PT enabled games installed currently but the performance is relatively the same across them all anyway.

Go try dlss in vr and compare it to SSAA. SSAA clearly does a better job. So SSAA isn't obsolete, and in the most difficult scenarios still delivers the best pq. Now at small screen 4k, the performance hit using ssaa it too much for any pq improvement and I would always choose dlaa or quality setting, but on big screen vr world were clarity is king, dlss is obviously softer and so I take the hit and use supersampling.. TAA also really softens edges and is my first tweak for any vr, turn off taa is possible.

VR is a completely different bag of fish though, and also in the supreme minority. So yes it is obsolete for the remaining 99% of modern day gaming. None of what's been said relates to anything to do with VR anyway.

You made a blanket statement, and from my pov you were not correct to say ssaa is obsolete. Just pointing it out. It is a Blackwell gpu thread discussing how much gpu power a person needs. Vr is small fish, but it is here and growing. Most the convo here around 4090/5090 is also a very low representation.
 
If VR was relevant to the discussion though then the context would have been different, in fact nobody has even mentioned VR until now. The entire discussion was in relation to RDR2 specifically (or obviously in the very least, older games as mentioned), so yes again, these ancient AA methods are obsolete.

It is a discussion in a public forum. You made a statement, I added some info as others maybe getting into vr and read what you say and not try ssaa with their vr headset. Not sure why you seem offended, wasn't my intention.

If they were not obsolete then they would still feature.

I doubt the 5090 will be able to either and the 5080 certainly won’t.

We are still a few years away from PT becoming doable without FG.
It's a miracle we can even do PT with DLSS let alone fg, even nvidia themselves are surprised as nobody expected offline render lighting to be possible so quickly but here we are.

From my pov I had joined the discussion this afternoon to say why for my needs a 4090 isn't overkill. In that statement I mentioned using supersampling as a main reason why. Then a few hours later I saw you posting and saying ssaa is obselete in a general context. I just pointed out why it isn't correct. So we are both talking from a different context.
 
What's going on with super micro?

They are a top 5 Nvidia customer; and the DOJ is investigating them for financial mis management and multiple auditors have fled the company and they are about to get delisted from the stock exchange

Rumour is that Nvidia has stopped taking orders from Super Micro and instead selling GPus elsewhere due to risk of Super Micro not being able to pay its bills

All relative I suppose depending on your resolution. For 1440p that would be absolute overkill but for 4k it’s enough just.
'Overkill' is 200fps with path tracing without DLSS or any other cheats and everything else set to the max at 4K, although I'd argue 6K, for the most modern games. Not barely squeaking by at a pitifully low resolution with most bells and whistles off or reduced at barely 60fps.

Probably FPS but this is at 1440p not 4k.

7900xt or the 4070ti Super is probably the ceiling for 1440p in terms of gpu grunt required to have a good experience.
I agree a 'good' experience is desirable but if the settings are there then there is potentially more image quality to be had at high fps. If I want a 'good' experience with a few compromises I'll buy a console.

Either some folks have their systems set up wrong or their 4090s are a bit busted? The most hardened GFX games out today (path traced) all run at 100fps+ when utilising all the modern tech RTX has to offer at 4K and some of us have demonstrated this in videos and RTSS screens plenty of times.

Unless by struggle people are referring to not being able ot get near 240fps for a 240Hz display, well no GPU will be able to do that in modern engines like UE5, the RTX 5090 won't even get there lol.

My personal view is that once you get top 100fps however that might be and with max GFX settings, you're in the best possible position. Games at launch that are bugged or unoptimised do not count and people need to stop normalising this sort of commentary by claiming a GPU isn't capable because it can't run game x that just launched over 80fps at 4K etc.

As for RDR2, I actually forgot how that ran even though I installed it again a few months ago, so re-downloaded it and ran the benchmark:

Full disclosure I'm running RDR2 at 6K using DSR. No MSAA. I can't run CB2077 path traced at 100fps even with DLSS frame gen. Please advise which settings to change to achieve this. I am running DSR 2.25 which may or may not be relevant :).
