My other half has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

She has to control it by dietary means but the G.P. will only prescribe enough strips to test her levels once every three days.

Now this is a bit stupid so we need to buy some extra.

Any other sufferers know of a source for the "freestle mini" test strips as they are going for £30 for 50 in our local chemists.

Testing 3 times a day is therefore not a cheap option.

Obviously we will do it but object to wasting thr money if we can find a cheaper option.

Thanks

Hmm that's a bit crap isn't it. Unfortunately I've never seen them sold any cheaper which to me seems ludicrous since people that need them depend on them often in life vs death situations with low blood sugar.

All I can say is read up on low GI and Atkins diets because they are the key to stabilising your blood sugars. Read up as much as you can about diabetes and understand what it does, how it works and why it has happened. You'll probably find after you have her diet understood and a few tweaks made you won't have to test sugar too much.

I wouldn't worry about testing 3 times a day because she won't be getting highs and lows like someone with type 1 who has to take insulin to maintain their sugars. With type 2 you just get that continually high sugar which you can control with diet tweaks and as long as you get it under control you won't get any of the side effects later in life.

Oh yeah and try and get as much information out of the doctor as you can, maybe think about changing doctors to one who understands it a bit better.

Get used to it, i have type 1 diabetes and at first i need to test like 5-6 times a day probably more and i was going through a tub of 50 strips likes nobodies business but the doctor would not give me more than one per prescription.

I clearly needed them but still i was forced to just keep getting one per time like once a week which was a pain. You can pick up cheap kits for a couple of pound which usually have a about 10-20 in it.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Will look into the diets and cheap test kits

Oh, Jonny69, Strangely she does get hypos with her type 2. Medics are stuck as to why

I wont do into anything medical for obvious reason but hypos are very possible on type2 as i well know.

And just keep dropping of the repeat perscription sheets at your quacks and build up a supply.

I was testing 3-4 times a day at the start but now im down to 5-6 a week.

DO NOT PAY FOR ANYTHING.

The only "good" thing about being diabetic is you get a medical exemption certificate and all your perscriptions are free from now on. And that applies to type 1 and 2.

That's what I thought, that's why I suggested change quack.

Pineapple juice works well for staving off those hypos and is a damn sight nicer tasting that that Glucogel stuff they give you :)

GP is wise to quick repeat prescriptions

We have been told that diet only controlled diabetes does not get free prescriptions even with the need to test

I'd get in touch with the diabetes society about that one. If they are that concerned about it that they are making her test blood sugar I think your doctor might be wrong :/
