Blu ray pc surround sound advice?

Budget for speakers and soundcard?

Bear in mind that the player software that comes with most Blu Ray drives is 2.0 channel only. You may have to pay extra for 5.1 or 7.1.

USB headphones generally don't work with soundcards, as they have their own sound device built in.

The Xonar D1 has Dolby Headphone, which is designed to emulate surround sound (very well I might add) over standard stereo headphones. I would highly recommend Goldring DR50 or DR150 with the Xonar (I used to have a Xonar D2, which reportely sounds very similar).

The main issue is the headphones will sound immensely better than the speakers. Unless you have friends round, I suspect that you might not bother with the speakers.

be careful with 5.1 surround sound headsets: some people are quite critical of them and i'm one... you'd be much better off going stereo

True but

Got the Lg BlueRay/Hd H20L about 6 mnths ago - it came with Power DvD :)and 2 speaker sound.:(

Did not want to spend a fortune so just got on with it.

Anyway when the software was installed it included an ET call home bit to look for upgrades which ran from time to time and 'updated' itself.

No problems ... except it now runs 5.1 :D- one of the updates must have included it . Suddenly dawned on me that the sound was not only coming from the front (no idea as to how long it may have been running :o) and having checked realised had got a nice upgrade.

Do not often get good luck like this so thought I'd share - Just goes to show good things do happen (But certainly would not expect it)
