Panasonic slates ~$1500 Blu-ray player for September

New York (NY) - Confirming suspicions that Panasonic would not have Blu-ray players available prior to summer, the company announced today that it plans to ship its DMP-BD10 player in September, promising to keep its shelf price at "less than $1,500."
Panasonic is timing its release in sync with that of its 58-inch plasma screen HDTV, whose price is not yet revealed.
They will be under £100 in a years time :p

Me and 4 mates paid £5000 for a 1x cd burner back in 95 so its all relative.
That tops me. Mine was £4000, but that was for player and software. The software was DOS-based thing (Personal Scribe IIRC) that was VERY easy to screw up, and that alone was about £1500. Oh, and blank disks were £15 each ..... wholesale ..... in bulk. It was, IIRC, a Yamaha CDR-100.

We also had to buy two 1 gig SCSI hard drives at a £1000 each because you put your files on the first and using the DOS software you made an image on the second and then burnt it.

Why spend 5k on a disc writer - what was that important to put on CD?

I was going to use my 5th to make audio cd's of my duo (at the time) and loads of other artists in the city. I'd planned it all out and had loads of orders. Because I was last to put in, I would be getting the system in 5 weeks time.
One of the blokes was phone phreaking 24/7 using a modem coupler to the USA and the Police came through his door one saturday morning at 7 am. They found nearly 100 copies of Encarta 95 in his house which at the time retailed for £350 new  He was selling them at £50 each (I actually bought one).
Anyway, the Police took the lot and I lost £1400 without getting my feet wet.
It was several years later when I bought a Yamaha 4x burner with Adaptec SCSI card from Millennium (OCUK). The Yamaha was £450 and the card was £140. Disks had come down to £2.50 by then and they were only 640 meg in size.

What's the point in buying one of these? Watch a small selection of *****y movies in higher resolution?

Thinks back a few years...

What's the point of buying a DVD player to watch a small selection of films at a higher res than video?

....Bah, never catch on! :p

I agree, I'm going to let the war play itself out for a while and see which way it goes.

Besides, if you wait until next year you'll get a blu-ray machine for sub-$500 (maybe).

I'm not sure of the model number of the CD-R drives we had at work, but they were big clunky caddy loaders, so may well have been CDR-100s. Had one on my desk for a while, and I had no idea they cost that much.

I mean buying one for megabucks on day one.

I was lucky enough to have a sony blu ray recorder at my disposal for training at work a few months back.

Very impressive technology, and capable of storing up to 250Gb when in a caddy IIRC. Its purely HD and imagine being able to buy, I dunno, every episode of 24 on one disc in high definition. Plus things like interactive menus are planned with content updatedable over a wireless network etc etc

Its all very clever, but not worth the money yet. The one I played with was about 5k's worth. Oh, and japanese :p
