Ok , i have my i5 machine an upgrade end of last year in the flavour of a bit more ram , and a XFX Radeon R9 290 DD gfx card. The graphics card was a nightmare to get to install with duff dirvers giving me black screens, eventually i found some older drivers which worked however ever since the pc has been blue screening, somtimes every 10 mins, other times every few hours, it seems to be when im demanding more from the machine.

Im wondering if theres a change my PSU is no longer up to the job ?, is there anyway to check, or would this give other symptoms.

What PSU you got? Ideally it should be 650W or more....
Have you got dedicated 6pin and 8 pin PCI-express power lines or are you using molex adapters?

Assuming the PSU is sound, the card should work without any drivers installed (presuming you are using Windows). Mine have all been plug and go....

I would need to check, pretty sure its a 550w corsair, and i think i may have had to use an adapter they supplied.

The card worked without any drivers but very slowly, as soon as i upgraded using the ati website drivers it gave me a black screen.

My brother seems to be in a similar situation. He purchased his PC last year and never bothered to ask about the issues he has had. Only until I bought my PC this year and built mine myself did he ask me.

Anyway, he has been getting blue screened a lot and I'm beginning to think this is all down to his PSU. He put this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...d=google/pla&gclid=CJvttoPo8MUCFaXHtAodfywAzQ into his PC and is trying to run this with it is either a 550 or 600W PSU. I checked the manufacturers website and states a PSU of 750W.

Is it better exploring any other possible reasons for blue screens before getting a new PSU? Could this be caused by out of date drivers or anything?

(ssharp59, not hijacking as any information provided could help the both of us:p)

There's a bit of freeware you can get called BlueScreenView that helps decode blue screens. It isn't 100% accurate but any time I've had a blue screen that has been able to tell me why. More often than not its just some out of date drivers causing compatibility issues.

Just checked now im home, the power suppy is corsair thx 650w and 2 2 seperate pci express power lines, although both are 6 pin but with like a 2 pin daisy chain of it. I guessing this should really be up to the job. Ive just tried that bluesceenview , its loaded the dump files however hasnt associated them to any drivers.

Not sure whats gone on there, that could either be the program not working properly or it telling you the problem isn't to do with drivers and is with the hardware itself.

For example: My GTX780 died last week and had to get it RMA'd, bought a 980Ti as I'm going to sell the 780 to a friend wanting a budget rig. Just reinstalled BSV and it found the below.

It found the GFX drivers (nvlddmkm.sys) to be faulty but when the PC rebooted the card killed itself somehow. I can't say for certain as I've never experienced your problem but I imagine its related more to hardware.

@ssharp59 my pc ran as it was for a year plus then i upgraded my 7950 to a R9 290 vapor x , then my pc crashing started ,, well more like just the pc turning off, my psu is a 600w toughmaster.
i have now reverted back to the 7950 and the pc is back to 100% fine,, so i am pretty sure its my gfx drawing more power that the psu could provide.
im now awaiting delivery of an 850w psu.

my problem similar to yours , except i never ever got a blue screen ,, just like someone had turned the power off.

I had this last year and you can't fix it ! If you are getting this after Re-installing drivers then sorry to tell you this but the CARD IS DEFECTIVE ! Send it back and get it replaced asap. This is caused in the memory chip inside the card you can't fix it.
I had this last year on my 290x and I sent it back and MSI got overclockers to send me a brand new card.

To update this, even with a better powersupply i still lhave the same issues having looked again the blue screens were caused by drivers , however with the latest drivers i only get a black screen on start up so I Returned the card to overclockers however they have tested it and its working. "CARD HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE UNDER LOAD FOR THE PAST 24 HOURS. INSTALLED LATEST DRIVERS WITH NO ISSUE AND RAN HEAVEN, VALLEY AND FURMARK WITH NO PROBLEMS "

Im pretty stuck now, im guessing my system setup just does not like this card with its latest drivers, it seems to be a worldwide issue with these cards but its been tested as fully working :(.. and i just have a gaming pc that im unable to use. Gutted

I removed the additional ram to ensure this wasnt the issue already and still had exact same results. Looking online it just seems to be a very common driver related issue although im guessing its own to individual system spec whether it will give you the issue. Never in my life of building rigs have I had such an anoying problem, Certainly will be steering clear of amd cards in the future. Ive found a few potentail work arounds that seem to work for some people that i may try.

Already tried a format of windows just to rule it out, also updated bios , updated chipset drivers, completely running out of ideas now, Tempted just to cut my losses and sell it on and avoid XFX and amd cards forever more.
