Is it true that a new BMW 118d does not have an interval setting for the windscreen wiper so you can only select on or off?

Well it'll have a rain sensor so why do you need an interval setting? You've got off, rain sensor, and super duper fast as the settings. You can also adjust how sensitive the rain sensor is.

Rain sensors **** me off! The slightest bit of grease or dirt or anything on the glass and it completely messes them up. On my Dads 300C, when they are on auto they go really slow when you need them to go fast, and then as soon as the rain calms they go to full!

EDIT: P*** got filtered? I didn't think it was classed as a swear word...?

Maybe it's just the ones I've used, which is really only my Dads 300c and my mums last car, a 206, which I'm sure never actually worked properly once. I think her new merc has them as well though and I can't say I've noticed a problem in that... I'm glad my 3 series doesn't have them as I like to control mine myself, especially on the motorways as then if you get splattered by some grease flicked up by a lorry or something you can spray the screen before smudging it all with your wipers.

It's not mine, a (female :p ) friend said to me that there was just on or off which surprised me.

So it's 100% sure there is a rain sensor, or is it possible that it is an option?

Must be the 300c, its not exactly a quality product.

My rain sensors have been slightly hit & miss, but not too bad.

Nah the 300c is shockingly lacking in quality! I was quite angry with my dad for getting it over a 7, but for the price you couldn't really argue. And the looks are still holding strong... shame about the "wollowiness" of it though.

Surely your E46 has a rain sensor?

Does it? I know it's got that switch you move up and down when it's in it's first position to change between, slow, a little bit faster, then a bit faster. But then if you flick the wiper to the second setting its just constantly fast, and then the thrid is even faster. I haven't noticed it changing in speed by itself... am I missing something? My Mums has a "auto" setting before the constant ones, but I haven't seen anything like that in mine. Time to check the manual!

Serious?! lol! I never noticed it changing in speed, the wheel seems to just make it fast, faster, then even faster?! Although I've only had the car about 3 months nearly... still, we have had enough rain for me to test. Maybe it's broken? Or maybe I just haven't paid enough attention to it, will test on the way home.

EDIT: It's not actually a wheel on mine though, its a 3-step switch that's on the stalk itself. Maybe sensors are an option?

In my experience, rain sensors work fine in anything German, on anything else they have a mind of their own

My mondeo's are hit and miss, some days they are great, but feel they aren't sensitive enough generally. When there is light drizzle they don't act enough, but when its raining properly they do work fine.

On my 120d, you push down for 1 wipe, up once for fast, up again for super fast

Then on the side of the stalk there is a button with 'A' on, push that in and it uses the rain sensor, with a dial on the stalk for sensitivity

The rain sensor is turd though as if you have a slightly dirty windscreen, it can't cope

On BMWs if you leave the stalk on [AUTO] and then turn the car off then when you turn the car back on the auto wipers function is disabled, you have to either turn the stalk off then back to [AUTO] again or flick the wheel up/down to re-activate the auto sensor.

I have had no problems at all with the wipers being weird, when it rains it comes on, when I speed up or the rain gets heavier the wipers wipe faster, when I stop it goes into slow interval mode....it just "works".

Above [AUTO] is just 2 constant speed settings, standard constant wipe and super fast wipe. Both modes are pretty limp compared to auto.

No you don't - this is only the case on the E46, E39, E38, E53, E85/86 and older.

Essentially any totally new design since late 2004 has a different rain sensor activation method - its a push switch on the end of the stalk. No need to turn it off as it defaults back to off when you turn the engine off.

Your car is always anally clean though which was actually their point :)

Whose point?

Oh, didn't know the newer models had changed on auto wipers, I should add "older" at the start.

People are saying that they dont work too well when the screen is dirty especially. Yours is probably never dirty hence the lack of "weirdness"
