BMW 2.0D vs Type R Civic

Before I start I would like to make it clear that I am not implying that the BMW 2.0D is quicker overall than a Type R (The previous model to the current spaceship design) but....

For any who know the M25 Junction 21 then the A41 to Hemel Hempstead, there is a 1/2 mile of so uphill climb dual carriageway. Coming off the M25 down the slip road straight onto the A41 first exit, I had a Civic at this point not sure of the model equally starting to make brisk progression in the outside lane up the A41. I am also getting my torque fix after a 2 week period in a 1.2 Clio 8V in the inside lane then pulling into the outside to pass a couple of slower cars chugging up the hill.

Anyway I was comfortably pulling away up this hill leaving this Civic dwindling behind up to 80-90MPH where I then eased off pulled into the inside lane where he shot by with the adolescent passenger giving a long passing look at my car which at this point noticed was a Type R.

He was giving it some as the speed he passed me which would have been equal to 90ish as I had slowed down to 70 at this point. Was it the torque up hill which let me pull a good advantage over the Type R?

Just to re-emphasise I know Type R is quicker from a standstill to 60 for sure and 100 I believe, but I was in 2nd gear rolling start 30MPH I would say.

This is becuase if you are not driving the Civic at 6500rpm, it's crap.

I test drove one before buying the BMW, and I did find it lacking somewhat expecting that WhooVTEC everyone describes but did not live up to the hype I had built up over the years as well as being a passenger of a Accord Type R which was my first experience of VTEC.

If I wanted to have fun I know which I'd rather be in. Diesels are not fun. End of discussion :D

That pretty much sums up the whole thread. There's nothing whatsoever wrong with diesels and if you're a ham fisted driver (like me!) they feel pretty fast but compared to a properly driven CTR there's just no contest.

The type R has to be kept in the vtec zone to make fast progress when its in this zone through the gears its a very fast car. Sounds like you caught the guy outside this zone and the TDI would have been right on the boil low down the revs in 2nd so I would not be surprised you would have pulled away a bit.

Hi there

It was most likely the standard Sport version with a Type R badge sorry, or someone who does not know about the VTEC part of the rev range, or was caught off guard and in the wrong gear. :D

I live about 10 miles from there and I usually leave pretty much most things standing up that hill :p

I leave everything standing in a 140bhp (152 RR :p) diesel. Most drivers don't use half the performance available in my experience.
