BMW and M Power Owners

A quick follow-up pic of the Z4 - I'll probably wait until someone better with a camera takes some before I post up a "full set" :)

Great looking car, a friend has made noises about getting one of these at some point and I keep trying to convince him to just so I could have a go! Enjoy :)

Mmmmmmmm... Z4 with E92 4.0 V8... yes please!

Someone on an FB group has put the V8 into a 1 coupe, now that would be a lot of fun to drive.

I've grown to quite like them too - still not fussed on the looks but they're that bit better to spend a long time in over the old model (not that the old coupe/convertible is bad, just a bit small for distance travel) without losing masses of handling ability

The usual internet opinions and so on - they handle absolutely fine all things considered, especially if you're used to the layout.

I'd say it has significant handling advantages over a stock mk2 MX-5 and after I did all the suspension work to mine (horizontal wishbones, adjustable dampers, geo set-up "just right" etc), I reckon the MX-5 marginally edges it due to the massive weight advantage the MX-5 had.

Hope that comparison helps you place where it is on the "sports car or not" spectrum.

Panthro on here said something very similar, they seem to get unfairly derided for their handling and how they drive.

Sounds like ill have to drive one, I had written them off when I got my Z4M because of their supposed boat like handling as a GT car.

I think the issue with it is that most reviewers tend to employ an amount of hyperbole making it sound as though the difference between two cars is night and day. Which I'm sure it is for those who spend all their time in a vast spectrum of cars, right up to the very best supercars. For the rest of us mere mortals, I'd wager that personal experience and preference comes into it far more.

The E89 is quite heavy for a two seat roadster, but then again many more vaunted cars are actually as heavy or heavier - see the aforementioned supercars, many are well over 1.5T, yet get excellent reviews. That's because the weight is expected in that market, whereas the Z4 is relatively heavy in its class. It's not the best at drifting either, which makes not a jot of difference to the roof down, wind in the hair feel as you thread it down a B-road at whatever pace you reckon is exhilarating.

Yeah, you should before you make a judgement as to if you'd own one or not.

I personally couldn't live with how terrible the E85 is inside (coming from the F10/W220 etc) which ruined the idea of a Z4M completely for me.

I think this is exactly it. No, it isn't a Lotus Elise. No, it isn't a Porsche Boxster S. Then again, it wasn't built to be like that. It is better looking (IMO, of course) than the Boxster and drives better than the SLK (and is better inside). It is perhaps the best "blend" of the two - sledgehammer engine, reasonable dynamics, excellent build quality, good looks, reasonable to run etc etc.

Sometimes, these things just come down to how you drive a car. Everyone has their own particular style behind the wheel and something that saps confidence from one driver doesn't at all bother someone else. I know it was exaggerated massively but as an example, remember when Clarkson took out an Elise and had nothing but understeer and some chap from Lotus came and showed him how to drive it "properly"? Two people in the same car able to drive it in such a way as to get two different conclusions.

Having never been in one (though I did look at them before I got my Z4m) I'm looking forward to seeing it at the meet if you do manage to come to it :)

Right now I can't see a reason I wouldn't attend but things can change dramatically at the last minute with work etc. As long as there is a petrol station nearby I'll probably do a limited number of passenger runs :)

Still can't believe you sold your e89s you terrible people, my 35i is still roaring but with the exhaust rattle that a lot of N54s seem to end up with, BMW are suggesting it is a very expensive fix for a noise which goes away inside 30s on startup so i'm going to leave it for now.
Did they change the grill? As I thought silver was an iS only part?
35i/iS have silver grills, iS have more options by default / power / msport kit et al. It's a bit of a chunky car and does roll a bit when pushed (I switched to standard tyres which helped a lot with my day to day driving) but for cruising about everywhere I just love it, especially the cockpit. Only thing i really wish I got on mine was the DCT but I'll settle for being able to row my own with a heated steering wheel. That is an option which is now going on all my cars, I can't go back.

It's easy to get nostalgic but having spent a few weeks of thinking about it, I can honestly say my 35is gave me more daily enjoyement than my M4 does.

The improvements in idrive/technology are the main area of improvement that I value and possibly looks, but performance and thrill have been a case of diminishing returns. Hard to describe but the M4 isn't as colourful a car for me.

Kids/boot space and technology mean I had to change, but if I were doing it again I would either keep the Z4 and buy a cheaper 430d, or have saved up for longer and bought a 991

I had the 35i with DCT.

Damn babies!

I feel your pain, I sold mine because I thought I needed to free up some money for a house move, which wasn't necessary at all. Then I thought about buying another one until the wife got pregnant.

iS has got silver wing mirrors too.

I would destroy you in a race.
