The BMW warranty is more expensive than third party warranties because it actually pays out, and allows you to use main dealers and their facilities.

Third party warranties are a complete mixed bag and should be avoided if you want true peace of mind, IMO.

Hi all,

I have just put down a reserve on a 66 plate 430d 3.0 M Sport and i have a few questions if anyone would be happy to help.

Ive been told that extended warranties on BMW are pretty much necessary, ive been shopping about and found one on "protect 4 sure" for 3 years @ £570, has anyone used this place and if so what are your experiences ?

Also one major thing for me is that being a 66 plate the car doesnt support Android Auto, anyone with a BMW of this age or older for that matter been able to get andriod auto working?

Cheers all!
What mileage is it on?

Just looked at the BMW offical warranty and they want £ 613 a year !

The place where im potentially buying from offer a 3year deal for £870 which can be used at BMW repair shops and there own. I might have to get that, seems fairly cheap in comparison.
3 years of no protection versus 1 year of protection..tbh at that price I'd YOLO it. I can't imagine a 3 litre diesel goes wrong all that often and there must be hundreds of replacement lumps on the second hand market? Likewise for all the other bits that may go wrong.

If the car doesn't have an existing BMW warranty then the price is higher but next year you'll get a lower renewal price I'd imagine.

£600 a year seems fine? I pay more than that for a 530d which is mechanically the same basically!

Yeah I think you maybe right.

First time BMW for me having been a Mazda owner most of my driving life, I knew the costs of owning a BMW can be high but now pricing everything up its getting close to what I can afford.

Looking at extended warranties and shopping around for a decent service plan at a bmw specialist is something I never had to really consider when bombing about in Mazda's, and been able to take them to any old garage knowing it wont cost the earth.

With cost of living and bills sky rocketing its making me think again! Sad times lol

Do you know when in 2018 the 340i was manufactured? if it's after July and has the PPF the MPSSK can't be fitted - I discovered this when I had mine.
Good point, it’s after 2018 - had completely forgotten about this

Edit:

Spent more time in both cars today. Have driven both for about 2 hours, and really got to know them quite well.

I take back what I said about the steering feel of the S5. It’s just different, but after some twisty roads, it’s no more absent of feel than the BMW, of which I’m familiar with.

It’s definitely the more special car, especially in the paint I’m looking at. Even inside feels more premium. This makes sense though - it’s a newer car, and it’s different, which is part of the fun.

It’s more special to drive too - the Quattro makes for an absurd pace off the mark, it’s brutal.

Will be putting a deposit down tomorrow to hold and then hoping to collect next weekend :)

Always amazes me how Alpinas ride on rubber bands yet they manage to make them comfortable yet other manufacturers can't manage it. What's the trick?

Interesting to see discussion on warranties, as yesterday I placed a deposit on a manual LCI E92 335i. It drives very well and is in extremely good condition, but I think that it has covered 100k miles excludes it from any BMW warranty?

The dealer can offer a Warranty Assist Gold product for up to two years; has anyone had experience with claims from this company?

I'm not sure how useful a warranty is going to be for you on a car of that age and mileage. There is one BMW warranty product available - driveline cover - but it will be very expensive unfortunately.

Facelifted Alpina B3 looks really nice!

Part of the reason why the M3 looks so bad is because the car on which it is based, the 3 Series, looks so good. Why did they do it? The current 3 Series is probably one of the best looking 4 door saloons BMW have ever managed to produce :(

I bought a 2015 428i Gran Coupe last July was was really conflicted about the BMW warranty and in the end decided to run the gauntlet and not bother. The car has been absolutely faultless with nothing going wrong at all. No squeaks or rattles, no complaints from the car itself either. I mean little things like the Bluetooth streaming from my phone sometimes throws a bit of a wobbler, I think maybe three times the reversing camera hasn’t worked but then comes back to life but nothing major or serious has happened. Having said that a Diesel engine, especially a modern, high power one is a complex beast so perhaps a warranty might be useful. As said the BMW one is really the only one worth it’s weight in gold. Remember to increase the excess to £250 (anything that’s going to cost less than that just get done yourself at a local independent) and remove the roadside assistance if you already have that from elsewhere. I get it with my premium bank account through the AA for example. This usually brings the price down to a more manageable level.

The entire point of the warranty is peace of mind and not having to mess about phoning up random garages whenever something goes wrong. For me, the £250 excess stops this.

If I'm paying for a BMW warranty it is because I don't want to have to deal with random garages for minor issues.

it is unusual to need to top the coolant up on such a new car. It's a sealed system so you probably need to be asking yourself where it's gone..

I can see that benefit too.
