BMW Climate Control Issue

The following has just started happening after the cold weather:

Climate control has a mind of its own - fans come on full, switch off etc but the climate control display doesnt register they are coming on.

Sometimes the fans respond to the climate control, other times not.

It does however always respond to on/off and all the bits and pieces seem to work apart from the strange fans.

I have checked all the connections on the back, wiggled around etc, but no difference. Any ideas how I can diagnose this - dont want to fork out for a new unit if its just a dodgy internal temp sensor (anyone know where that could be?)

Sounds like it could be the final stage resistor burried in the dash near the drivers footwell. It's £50 to replace it and causes this sort off issue?

Is it an E46, E53 or E39? Google 'DIY Final Stage Resistor' and there are a number of useful links. The only way of checking it is to replace it - it doesnt flag a fault code up. Its by far the cheapest possible solution though!

Fox is most likely correct, even before opening the thread topic I knew what the symptoms and problem would be. :)

It can also be a real PITA to change so paitence is required, but it can be done yourself. I changed it on my E46 but it was not easy.

update - many thanks to all, it was the final stage resistor, got one for £46 and took 25mins to fit (and most of that was looking in the wrong place for it - mine is in the drivers side!).

Cheers all, OCUK saves me another couple of hundred quid :D

Fox did say in the drivers side! But most online guides say passenger side because they are for LHD cars. It's a very common mistake to make. :D

wish I'd not brought torture into it! although, are there anyt legal forms of torture, and isnt it a bit like bullying and harrasment by way of "its classed as torture if the subject feels tortured!"

Anyway - eough of that, many thanks all.

I told you where it was in the first place :D
